I had one of the original pete jackson units,... before there was a choice of noisey or quiet.

    simple to install.

pros-sound cool, timing doesnt vary like a loose chain can
cons-cant hear any potential valve train issues over the gear noise.

final verdict- your call.... you like um or ya dont.(y)

Let me add, from experience. Pros first:
rock steady ignition timing, simple to install (well most of them are), sound kinda neat.

    Cons:
noisy (even the 'quiet' ones are loud), they eat up HP, sometimes they can transfer crankshaft vibration to the camshaft & eat parts/reduce HP even further, they are loud, they sound obnoxious, everyone hears you coming from a mile away, and they are loud. Did I mention that they are loud?

Seriously, if you didn't pay much for it, go ahead & use it. I prefer just a double row chain myself. Either that or a belt drive.

My thoughts are they are like noisy Harleys,, cool in the beginning, but after awhile you realize you cant sneak around.

ps have had them before,, no plans to ever use one again.

Her are my thoughts on the whole gear drive thing. (Like they matter)

When building a engine that will last we do everything we can to get the harmonics out of the engine. Harmonics play havic with the wear on things like barrings. That is why we ballance engines and insure all weight on the rotateing assembly is the same. The end result is you get a longer lasting engine with a little more HP too boot.

All that being said, why put something on your car that puts some harmonics back in? Does not make good since to me. Noisy gear drives have a bad habbit of putting wear on the #1 crank and cam barring.

My advise is you run a "GOOD" double full roller timing chain and be done with it. I hate engine noise!!!!!!!!! The only thing that should make noise on an engine is the exhaust (and that needs to be loud:29: )

Just my opinion, do what YOU like, that is we are all different. World would be boaring if we wernt.

    Good luck
    Don

I have run them, both Ford and Chevy.
The 'loud' ones are obnoxious on a Chevy, but subdued on a Ford.
This is due to the aluminum timing cover and integrated water pump on the Ford.
Chevy has the steel timing cover and separate water pump. They are extremely loud and this is where the bad wrap for noise comes from.
The loudest one I have ever heard on a Ford was whisper quiet compared to a Chevy.
So if anyone chiming in is basing their opinion on hearing a Chevy, it's no comparison.

Timing is rock solid with the gear.
    Harmonics are overblown.
On the SBF, you could need to grind a bit from the inside of the timing cover.
There is a tab down near the crank gear that needs to be cut out on every 302 I have done. Don't know about the 351w, probably the same. Easy mod.

IMO, use the gear set. You'll like it.
