Ok so I recently talked my dad into buying me a '74 maverick 200 i6 as my first car yay! But then I realized that I would really like a standard is it possible to switch from an automatic tranny to a standard and would it be cheaper for me to sell my mavy and buy a standard? (I'm not for sure if I really want a standard but they're just so much more fun to drive) Also I would like to know what EXACTLY I would have to do to get a 302 in my mavy as well thank you all. :Handshake

Maybe you shouldn't invest in getting a manual behind your 200 right now.

If there is a 302 swap in your future, make it a 302/manual project and do it all at once:thumbs2:

To swap from automatic to standard you will need pedals, clutch linkage, steering column if your shifter will stay on the column and a different shifter just to name a few. It can be done but it won't be fun.

Thanks everyone for your answers. So would it be a good idea just to look around my local junk yard and see if I can find a standard mavy and go from there and salvage like the steering column and pedals and such? I'm going to try and go with my buddy sometime this week to hopefully find a cheap 302 :thumbs2: would the standard swap parts have to come specifically from a mavy or are there some other cars that I could salvage parts from:hmmm:? Thanks

You don't need to swap the steering column.
and yes they are maverick specific..and pretty hard to find.
I haven't seen a maverick/comet in our junkyards in the past year.

    But good luck:thumbs2:

The manual shift column has different parts inside the column.

The mav is gone but i'm still here!

Why don't people ever mention a column swap when they switch to a t5/toploader? I haven't done the swap yet, but i've done my research...

that's great that you guys have a lot of cars in the junkyards over there...

It used to be the same here, we would get on a average a new mav/comet every single month.

but now were in a dry spell, were lucky to get a single mav/comet per year now...

and don't take my word for it

ask mavdog71, Mashori, Bryant, krelboyne, etc...

 Same here in Utah I've found 2 70's Maverick's, 1 70's Comet and a bunch of partials on older Comets and Falcons of various states.

Because a T-5 or Toploader has more than 3 gears. I guess somebody could adapt the 4-speed column from an early Econoline.

    I don't quite understand you...

the guy was asking whats involved in doing a manual swap.

What does that have to do with changing the column?
you can leave the automatic one in there(indicator and all)

unless he want's a manual with the shifter on the column...But i'm pretty sure he would have mentioned that.
