Knowing that the Mrs has her 75' 4-dr project I have been looking for one myself. Bout 6 mos ago found a 70' 2dr 250 for 600 and the guy never got back to me so was searching craigslist and what should pop up but the same 2dr. Went down tonight and laid down a deposit on it and ended up getting it for 450 complete with a new hood and two fenders off a donor car. Turns out he has 7 mav's on the property w/the majority being 71's. Now the debate...do I rework it stock or drop a 302 into it? Already getting followed around town in the 75 cuz couldn't find a stock aircleaner for it so cut the hood and have an aftermarket one sticking out...most ppl think it's an 8. Car also has spinner hubcaps cuz she likes them..lol. Will try and post pics of both soon.

What do you want out of the car? Better performance or better economy? That would decide what engine goes in it for me.

Yea, they were available in '70. I've seen a couple of 70's with 250's. One of them had factory A/C and a factory 8 inch rear.

This one was actually the only 250 out of the 7 Mav's he has on the property. Got lucky cuz there was a kid there to buy it just as I got there but the guy held it for me cuz I had dealt w/him before. The others were either 170's or 200's. Personally I want a sleeper so am thinking of the 302 but have no knowledge on how to swap them and the local shop said he would only swap a 6 for a 6..not an 8

Do a search on this board, there is tons of info about swapping a 6 to an 8.

I'd plan on having the car down for at least a couple of weeks to be safe. What's that old saying? "Figure out how long it's going to take and how much money it will cost, then triple that". Always seems to be true for me. :)

i swapped my 6 for an 8.. and it was very easy.. you really only need to get frame mounts for an 8, and exhaust manifolds, or headers, hooker makes a set of headers that drop right in,... my car was a 170 6, with a 3speed.. i put a 302 and c-4 in it.. and it was very easy to do..

i was scared before i started, not sure if i could handle it.. if you have worked on cars in the past, you can handle a 6 to 8 conversion

Only other car I have really worked on in the past was a 73 Luxury Le Mans and it already had a 350 in it. lol.

Ok, so here's a few pics of the Mrs's work in progress. The spinners were her idea :rofl2:. The racing stripe was rattlecanned on there in a moment of sheer boredom.

I am in my third week on my I6 to V8 conversion. Of course, that is only working on it on my days off and spare time. Today, I fired it up with a temporary gas tank and no exhaust for the first time. It was not hard and I did the entire job by myself. Many parts, including the tranny will interchange over to a 302, which helps. In fact, I used the tranny off the I6 and attached it to the 302 before installing them together.

I would go with the 302, also. Jamie is right, more cost and time than planned. Part of the extra time was spent cleaning and detailing the engine bay while the motor was out, though.

Good luck with the new toy!

    Jim

there should be lots of places in bremerton to swap that out for you. if i remember right there's a cruise on weekends in port orchard. at least there used to be, up by the a&w. you might ask some of those guys. are you in the service by any chance. i think they have a hobby shop on base. if not you'll need an engine hoist, jacks, jackstands, engine stand, and assorted tools. v-8 frame mounts, mav engine mounts, belly bar, tranny duals crossmember. other than that it's pretty straightforward, if you got the place and the time. :)

You are correct sir, there is still a cruise in in PO. I work right up the street from A&W and see it on occasion. The goal is to get one or both up to show standards and take them out for a weekend and show them off.
