On my way home tonight I drove buy a shop that specializes in building rearends for cars. Saw a familiar shape in front of the shop, so I turned around and went back and this is what I saw. The story is: This is the original body from the Gal'pin Ford Funny Car campaigned by Larry Fullerton from California back in the early 70's. http://www.70sfunnycars.com/previous3.html 9th car down on the page The shop's name is Danny Miller's Rear Gears. (636-861-3900 if anyone needs rearend parts) The owner Danny Miller used to campaign a Maverick Funny Car back in the early 70's, it was called Plastic Fantastic there is reference to it and the above car here http://www.computermagiconline.com/70sfunnycars/FunnyCars16.html top of page He said the body blew off of his car in 1972 and he went to a Challenger body. The body in my pictures (sorry they are from my phone) is one of the first two prototype bodies, it was made in many pieces (you can see the seams inside the car) They perfected the body and made more without the seams. Mr. Miller said he is going to take 8 inches out of the center of the body lengthwise and make a mold from it. So if anyone wants a Maverick funny car! He already has a new chassis and intends to race the car. I will try to stay on top of this and see the completed car. A unique thing about the car is in race form it had door handles (see photo of mounting), an antenna (see photo), marker lights, tail lights, a real steel rear bumper and a Maverick Gas Cap. All of these were genuine Maverick pieces. You can see these items in the picture of the White car in the link above. I was amazed at the detail of the shape of the headlights and bezels as well as the whole car. Thought this was cool and wanted to pass it on.
What a wonderful mini-pictorial history of some little known race cars. I am so glad you took the time to research the history and take the pictures. Made my evening.
errr...hmmmm...ya reckon shipping would be "OVERSIZED". This may be a better option than a tube chassis Mav or Comet. You think he'd mind if I call to find out the weight, cost and get some info on his frame rail. I may as well go ahead and move in with my dog...
I am not sure of his timeline on the project, I am sure he will love to talk with you about it. He is a Nitro guy from way back. He had the chassis sitting up on top of rack in his shop, I should have taken some pictures of that also Give him a call and tell him how you heard about it.
