First off let me say that I have been reading the forums for some time now, for I use to own a 1971 maverick....Well I figured I would go ahead and make myself a member since I truly HIT THE MOTHERLOAD with this find....Here's the story, my brother-in-law caught wind that there was a lady selling a maverick down in the country and him being a chevy man and me being a poor man lol I figured well maybe I will go take a fast look at it....So I let a few days pass and I was passing by the road when I remembered him telling me the car was sitting on that street....So I went and checked it out, boy was I glad....There it was a 1973 Ford Maverick Grabber in a barn...All original with no body damage or rust at all...Guys I'm telling you this car needs nothing but a fresh coat of clear coat....No body work at all...Not even a dent....Anyways I started looking around the car and on the inside...The interior was flawless...The only problem is the front seats had dry rotted...Well I continued to look around the car and then I thought this car is in such good shape it must not have a lot of miles......So I checked out the Odometer...And no lie it said 161 miles....I was thinking impossible maybe it just tipped 100 thousand...After checking around and talking to the very old OLD owners a little more I was told that the car was bought for their daughter who 2 weeks later went overseas to see her military boyfriend and ended up getting married and never returned home for the car so the odo is correct!!!!!!:bananaman...It sat in an enclosed barn ever since....Here are some pictures....I know it was a long story but I just couldn't help share it...So anways $500.00 and a tow bill.. the car is now mine.......
? ........Well I didn't want to make my story to long but I talked to the woman forever that day...They were well into there 80's...I bet the husband said only 2 words the entire time....The car wasn't advertised...My brother-in-law's friend went there to pick up some scrap metal the old man had sitting in the barn and thats when he seen it and asked would the guy sell the car...He said that he never thought about it, but he guess he would.....
Lets see under the hood. Looks like probably 100,161 to me. At 500 bucks, it was a great deal, regardless.
Okay I'll take some pictures.. I drained the gas and tried to get it running when I bought it and couldn't get nothing...So I replaced the points, fresh fuel and the battery and she fired up...Needs the carb rebuilt obviously and I'm going to replace the spark plugs...I'll get the pictures on here as soon as I get off work.....
Why would they lie about the miles with the daughter story, then give the car away for $500. I bet that is the real story.
I'm almost sure its a real story...I don't think some 80 year old farmers would lie to me, but you never know....Why would they? Regardless it was a great deal..
Cool story and a great looking car! What does the brake pedal pad look like? You should be able to distinguish 161 miles versus 100,161 miles with a general look over. Brake pads/shoes, general engine bay cleanliness, even the ignition key would show very little use. Nice find though! Great job!
I don't think they "lied". I just think maybe the time line could be off a bit. The mileage could to be 100161. They just didn't drive it on the same back roads most of us would have lol. Great score regardless. I do feel a little jelous lol. I can only dream of finding a car in a barn like this.
Show me some underhood pic's, I'll tell you if it's a 161 or 100161. Since it's a Grabber, it should have had Firestone "Wideovals", not those white walls... Either way, looks like a nice car. Whats the serial number??
The whitewalls and the first zero looks like it rolled make me suspicious. No matter its still an awesome find. Now get to work and replace all those old parts especially all the rubber items. Your really shouldnt try to drive it with 37 year old flex hoses. It will be a very nice project.
wouldnt mind having the door tag information for the '73 Grabber registry.... (see link below in my signature)
