    Hey all,

No luck finding anything around home yet. I was curious about opinions on this?

    https://memphis.craigslist.org/cto/5957855120.html

Had a one- day CL Maverick sell for $400 this weekend in KS, but w/o title. 200 ci, three on the tree, pics weren't good enough to evaluate rust etc.

May check out a Mercury Comet east of KC, but not optomistic. There is also another 8 cyl Comet for $1,000, but the rust is everywhere and severe.

That is a nice little project if you can do the work.

Yeah, it would be a nice looking project, but seems pretty rich for no tranny and a ?? engine. I assume the one pic is of the ECM and he was hoping to stay with the EFI? The wrenching doesn't scare me and the old man in me would prefer a carb, but, this is for my son. Can you land the ECM and tie the appropriate sensors to the mudule and be most of the way there?

    Hey all,

I kind of like the looks of this one too, but 700 miles would likely add $500 or more to the $$.

    http://mansfield.craigslist.org/cto/5932724078.html

Plus, the close ups of the right rear make me think bondo, seems inconsistent in curvature, but it may just be the angle of the photo.

    Thanks 71gold and Hotrock,

So the Memphis route would be to replace the EFI with new intake & carb. How do the newer engines fit into the Mavericks, a lot of mod to make the peripherals work ?, or not to bad?

Yeah, that is the Comet I referenced that I'm not to optimistic about. The seller got it on trade because he was having challenges making payments on a Corvette I believe. He started at $2,500 and is down some, but it's not a running/driving car. When I asked him about bringing a battery etc. to check it out (he said he has rotated the engine with a breaker bar), he said he wasn't big on other people wrenching on his cars. When I offered the opinion that I didn't want to pay $2,000+ for a $500 dollar car (if motor and tranny are crap), he said I probably didn't need to come and look at it. If he continues down on the price, I may be interested, and my son and I may go look at it just for the practice. Additional pics show rust through on the rear of the passenger front quarter and pretty rusty floors, though no holes seen there, would require a close look. Oh, and to top things off, he didn't have title in hand yet, was waiting on it to arrive. That may have changed at this point, don't know.

Were the Comet seats that different than the Maverick? or are those just thrown in out of another vehicle (looking at pics and seat color, I would guess they may be original)? Were any of these 6V?, looks like a resistor on the passenger side shock tower?I assume the GT would add a little, but in this condition I wasn't sure. May very well check it out the same weekend we try to look at the other if it works out.

Based on your experience with the salesman and description of the Comet in this post along with the pictures of the Comet in your following post, I would keep looking.

That $1,000 Comet looks toast. I wouldn't mind some interior pieces out of it. Any idea if he is parting out if I does not sell?

The 1970 is a real project...not for the faint of heart. For what it is worth, those are the wrong frame mounts for a V-8.

I would assume the 1976 has bondo....but at least it is a running and driving car...I would probably pick that one.

If the brown 1972 Comet doesn't run....keep looking. Plus the title issues.

The $1000 green Comet is a GT. It is ROUGH. Parts car only in my opinion.

    Thanks for the opinions fellas,

Pretty well confirmed my concerns, the search is part of the fun though, just takes time. The owner of the GT seems like a straight shooter, said the same thing Craig, "good parts car".

Keep Looking Chris : There are OTHER cars out here .. You just have to be patient and continue your search. Don't SETTLE for a car that's going to be a real ' handfull ' to bring to a driver . You'll eventually find a car that is absolutely WORTH the funds you're going to spend . Keep the phone numbers on file and Keep Looking ! Just my opinion.

That car is not worth a grand. It's a rotted parts-car.
