I just installed a pertronix module. It's hooked (both wires to the coil). It is MUCH better than the points. My question is, I have 6.2V at the coil and the engine runs great. Is it necesssary to run the unit off a 12 V source, or is the 6.2 V OK? Will it cause a problem?

That doesn't sound right to me? I don't remember what mine read, but I am sure it was higher than 6

If you go to their site, it says they will work down to 8v. Plus some people think they won't last long if you don't have 12v...I've been running my Pertronix 1, for 3 years or so, off the factory resistive wire with no issues.

I know a guy that picked up 0.5 seconds in the quarter mile, with a simple switch of his Pertonix to 12v.

This was with a 428CJ Cougar, your results may vary.

Point-type distributors operate on 6 instead of 12 volts (thats why they have resistors) I have heard alot of arguements for/against 6 versus 12 volts on the pertronix, I've been running mine for 3 years in my Mustang on 6 volts and it works great. So if your happy with it I wouldn't worry about it.

the reason you want 12 volts is the coil. a coil jumps up the voltage that is used to light off the air fuel mixture. the more voltage you start with the more you end up with.

Yes the 12volts is important. In my different cars I'm running all 3 different versions of the Pertronix (Std Pertronix, Pertronix II and the new Pertronix III). it does state that you can run as low as 8volts without any problems. Some people may be running it on the factory resitor wire and it works just fine.

what I've ran into, as a lessons learned was, I was running a Std pertronix thru the factory reisitor wire for close to 5 years no problems. I left the interior light on and it drained the battery, so I went to boost it, and in the course of doing so, the volts were too low and ended up frying the Pertronix somewhow. but ever since I've ran it to a 12v source I have had no problems even if over the years if the battery grows weak.

    Hope this helps.

I thought the resistor knocked voltage to 8 or 9 volts,,, Might want to check your connectors and clean them to see if that brings voltage up.

    Thanks guys
12 Vs it is. Now I just need to find a 12 V switched source. I'll bet I can. heheh

In the the bundle, where the engine harness plugs into (@ the firewall) there is a switched 12V

Here is the wire Dave is talking about. You have a 2 red wires and 1 white wire coming from the firewall...red is switched 12v
