Guys I need help. I am not a professional mechanic but am trying to put my heart and soul into the 77 maverick I purchased. I suspected the engine was frozen (been sitting since 1977) pulled plugs and soaked cylinders all week with wd40. put new battery cable on it today and the first thing i noticed the selenoid was sticking ( I guess thats the selenoid mounted on passenger fender. the starter clicked loud everytime i touched the ground cable to the battery and sometimes the fan would turn a fraction of an inch. and the battery cables were getting really hot really fast would love advice or tips at this point Thank You. Daniel
It sounds like a bad starter and solenoid are bad. You can also turn the engine over by have from the crank pulley. If you can turn it than its not frozen.
Wd40 is not oil...it is made to dispense water. Use PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench. Try to get the engine turning by hand with the sparkplugs removed before using the starter.
The thing on the passenger side between the battery and the spring tower is a relay. The solenoid is on top of the starter. If the engine has been sitting a long time, I would pour kerosene into the cylinders, not some spray lubricant. To check if the engine is seized, try rotating the crankshaft by hand, using a breaker-bar and large socket with extension.
The thing on the passenger side between the battery and the shock tower IS the solenoid. Older Ford starters use what is called a Poll Shoe type Bendix engagement. It uses the magnetic field from the starter case windings to move the Bendix to the ring gear. You have a bad solenoid, you also have either a bad starter or a seized engine. If you can not turn the engine over with the crank end bolt then remove the starter and try it again with the crank bolt. It may be that the starter is keeping the engine from turning over. If it then turns over get a new starter and solenoid. If not then what I use is either PB blaster or Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders and let it soak for a day or so. Then try to turn it over again. Good luck, I hope this helps a little.
Thanks guys I'm going to remove the starter in the morning and try turning it over. I'll post the results
you dont need to remove the starter to turn over the motor. that wont help you to be able to try turning the motor. you need to put a socket on the bolt in the front of the crankshaft in the center of the pulley. then use a long handle ratchet or breaker bar to try turning the motor.
This thing has been sitting a long time. If the starter is bad and the Bendix is stuck in the ring gear, the engine will not turn over. Remove the starter to remove one more thing that could be keeping the engine from turning over. Then use the bar to try and turn it over.
Agreed, I've seen a few jammed starters that prevented the engine from rotating even with a breaker bar... Unfortunately with the long period of storage, the engine may well be stuck...
If the car has been sitting since 1977....the motor not turning over is the least of your problems in my opinion.
Yesterday I Poured diesel into all of the cylinders. Today I removed all the belts in case anything was frozen. Removed the starter to have it tested. And then I attempted to turn the motor with a rachet and socket. either way I turned it I just loosened and tightened the bolt. I am going to try letting it sit a few days with transmission fluid in all the cylinders. The factory sticker is still on the valve cover which gives all the specs. The engine is a 250ci My budget is VERY tight so if anyone has any magic tricks I could really use the help. Thanks guys for all the replys! Daniel
If you are on a really TIGHT budget...you bought the wrong car. If sitting since 1977, the transmission will need rebuilt, and 100% of the brakes will need replaced. That just gets you started. Not trying to rain on your parade. Just trying to be realistic. Good Luck.
