ok so this is strange. With no one even near the car every maybe 45 minutes the horn will go off for about five minutes strait and then just stop and do it again in 45 minutes..... I pulled the plug on the horn for now but i need to fix it to drive it. What would cause this I have no idea!? I have the factory horn and steering wheel for my 71 Maverick. Please help thanks, Jakob
My guess would be a faulty horn switch expanding and contracting the contact due to temperature changes in the wiring/contact....
+2 on the horn switch! I had the same problem. If the covering has gotten hard and stiff, you'll need to replace it also.
Remove the steering wheel pad and unplug the horn switch. Plug horn back up and wait "45 minutes" to see.....
Mine did the same thing at the slightest change in temp. I took it apart to see how it works. Basically there are two flat copper rings (contacts) at the top of the button under the vinyl. When the vinyl shrinks it forces the contacts together. The repair is finicky at best, the wires in the back need to be untied and the vinyl cover can be pulled apart to get to the inner workings. Once you get it apart you may be able to save it but my advice is buy an NOS part. There seems to be plenty still out there and they come up on eBay from time to time. The three clips in the back that hold in on the wheel are also a PITA, they rust easily and I had to bend mine back into position to get them to work right (every time I pulled off the button). Like I said before, NOS is the way to go. I ended up changing my wheel so I never had to worry about it again.
yeah it's a ford thing. when i was a kid my parents had an 83 e350 van and it would do it all summer long. when ever it did it we would go out and pull the fuse until the next time we went to drive it.
