I just read a thread mentioning that Type F transmission fluid is supposed to be used and not power steering fluid. I just recently purchased my '73 Mav and was told by the previous owner that the ps pump was leaking, they replaced it with a new one, and that the new one appeared to be leaking as well. Could this be caused by using the wrong fluid? And, if so, what is the easiest method of purging the system of the wrong fluid? (I will confirm with the previous owner what they used)

Disconnect the four fluid line fittings at the control valve and drain the fluid into a suitable container. Turn the front wheels to the left and right several times to force all the fluid from the system.

Fill the reservoir with Type F fluid. Run the engine for a few minutes then turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times to bleed the air out of the system and check the system for leaks.

I've confirmed that standard autozone-branded PS fluid was used. So I will definitely be draining that and putting in auto tranny fluid.
