the power steering pump on mt 74 comet sounds horrible.would i just be able to take it out n go or should i replace it. thanks in advance guys.
i'd replace it if it needs it. my sprint was squealing whenever i turned the wheel at all. it cleared up by making sure the fluid was full and tightening the belt.
even if it need replacement, its a pretty easy task. but if it doesnt have fluid in it, try to find out where its leaking out.if the problem is a bad hose or cylinder replace those instead.
What kind of noise is it making? Be sure it is full, and full of the correct fluid. Also, overtightening AND undertightening the belt will make awful noises. It will sound high pitched and squeeky like a loose fan belt if loose, but will have a similar sound with a little bit of a metallic grind to it if too tight. Touch the tank when it makes the noise to verify it is the power steering and not water pump, or some other device. I have taken mine apart a few times, and there really is not much in there that can go wrong if it is constantly lubricated.
I encouraged touching the tank so he can feel if it is a mechanical grinding going on, or just high pitched noise. I hope that anyone who would post to a technical would do this in a safe manner. But, I agree, take the belt off to verify if the noise is coming from that pump, or maybe another accessory.
