are the automatic transmissions for a 302 on a mustang the same as on the maverick? I know someone locally who is selling a 302 rebuilt engine with a rebuilt transmission from a mustang, and I was wondering if it would work in my 71 maverick 4dr

About the only difference you might find in some of the C4's might be the lever your shifter hooks up to. I would think the Mustang one would be the same or similar unless your car has a column shifter. The Mustang would be floor shifter and the lever would be pointing the opposite way for a column shift car. It can easily be changed if you have the parts from the old tranny but I don't suggest trying to do it if you've never done it before. You actually have to remove the valve body from the tranny and it's a little tricky getting it back in the proper position..

I've been told the shift arm in the transmission is the same, just flipped 180 degrees. If the transmission is out of the car and upside down on a bench, Its really pretty easy to reverse it, but as Ray suggested, get help if your not sure you can do it. Valve bodies are full of go and if you dont get it back in right, all the go leaks out.

you need to check what the year of the transmission is. if it is pre 1970 the input shaft is 24 spline and you need a different convertor. after 1970 they changed to 26 spline. believe me i found out the hard way. :banghead:
