Ok, I like mavericks. I'm one of those loves big engines in small cars kinda guys. Anyways. There's this maverick I found and I was talking to a family member about it, they told said don't bother. Mavericks are bad cars, unreliable and classed it in the same category as a pinto *I know of the pinto with the exploding fuel tank thing* saying they are just as bad as those, being they "know" because their cousin had one that was always needing to be worked on and was unreliable. I was curious, are there any truths to these? Are Mavericks this way? Or was it just a case of the ol' "They got a bad car out of alot of good ones" thing? Thanks.
There is no such thing as a bad car, just bad owners. Buy the Maverick, theyre cheap and easy to work on, all you have to worry about is existing rust issues.
No, mavericks are cool, reliable cars and their should be alot more of them on the road. Pintos are not the same as maverick, they are below the maverick, just like the mustang is above the maverick Comets are parts cars, na comets are just fansy mavericks.
Anything that can be done to a Mustang can be done to a Maverick with enough work....Mavericks are harder to find/build(you could build an entire mustang with repop parts) and more expensive to fix, which puts them above Mustangs IMO
well I don't know how unreliable they can be, with so many of them still running around after all these years?? they can't be that bad ,and are easy to fix when things do go wrong, and parts are cheap for the most part, so I would say no to being unreliable part , as for saftey I don't recall them having a fuel tank rupture problem (like the early pinto, in accidents) and I feel they are as safe as most cars from their time?? so again, I just don't see it? but others on the site have had them longer than me, and would know more about it.
I feel a lot safer in my maverick then I do a new car...lol althougth statistically speaking theyre not safer......for the other driver
I have a 70 2-dr. Maverick. Inline 200-6. It was hit in the front by a jerk that ran a stop sign at over 30 mph. All it took out was the fenders, hood, radiator support and grille. Everything from the cowl back is good. The motor did not get hurt nor the occupants. The other car was a newer Audi; it was totaled and my Maverick is fixable. The Maverick did its job and, I'm sure glad I was driving the Maverick instead of the Audi. The Mavericks are built 10 times better than any newer car. BUY THE MAVERICK!!!!!
Agreed, youll be a lot happier with the maverick, 99% of all accidents can be avoided by paying attention to surrounding drivers and situations...the other 1% is unforeseeable circumstances, such as a tire blowing out in the semi beside you...but it doesnt matter what youre driving, if a semi rolls over you airbags sure wont help you...lol
The thing about it, is it doesn't have a title. so I've gotta talk to a tag agent, see if they can do anything about getting me a title off a bill of sale. I mean its a nice "looking" car with a 302 and c4.. but I still have to see it in person, it's up north of the state. But Yea. Thanks for the input.
What state? Some states you only need a bill of sale for a car that old. Someone on here will probably pop up and tell you what your states requirements are for that car.
Mavericks/comets were very reliable and cheap transportation.Like any car...It will live as long as it is properly maintained. They are simple to repair/upgrade and take modifications quite well.As for safety...Well...They arent as bad as some would have you think but...They do not have "crumple zones" to absorb impacts, hence; you bounce around in the car absorbing the impact.Steel instrument panels and steel inner doors dont make for a crash fiendly environment for the human body. Will a Mav fare better in a minor wreck than a newer car? sure but, they do bend in odd places when hit hard. They dont handle or stop like newer cars do( they can be made to for less than a new cobalt costs) Does a Maverick/Comet look like every other jelly bean/easter egg car on the road...No way! That is a big part of the allure of owning one.Its old...its loud...its smelly...it wont stop for nuthin and has chrome on it! If you are concerned with safety as a high priority for your daily driver...Get a Taurus or a cadillac...If its about the cool factor and a weekend driver/warrior...By all means buy a Maverick/Comet now.You will be ahead of the game in 10 yrs when the cars popularity starts to come into its own...Good luck!!!
