when removint the center section do you just unbolt the drive shaft and unbolt the center from the housing and it'll come off? or am i missing soumething? thanks
Yeah, the axle shafts have to come out of both sides, but you can just pull them each out a few inches and let them rest in the tubes. Just as much as they engage the axle, so they don't keep you from pulling it forward.
remove the wheels and there are 4 bolts holding the axles on. undo them and pull the axles a few inches out. should drop right out. may need a little persuasion. ( a few light taps with a bfh)
They should slip out with a little coaxing(due to age)but you shouldnt need a puller.Remember to un bolt those axle flange plates first.(they slip out easier that way)
You gotta take off the brake drum. Then there will be a fairly large hole in the axle flange that you can put your socket, and extention through to get to each of the 4 nuts they told you about. Just turn the axle hole to line up with each one. If the socket won't fit through the hole, then put a short socket on behind the axle and put the socket extention through the hole. I have yet to have one that didn't need a good pullin'. You can put a slide hammer to it, bolting it to a couple lugs. Or you can put a length of chain on the lugs, and then crack it back like a whip. Or, and this is the best option unless it is severely stuck... put the brake drum on backwards with a couple lugs threaded on barely, then use the drum as a slide hammer.
i was just asking about how it was done in case something comes along my cougar is a 3.00 8'' but thats probably about what my mav already has so i dont think i'll go through the hassle. i think my mav's a 2.80 or something close
yea thats what i figured. i just wanted to make sure i knew how it was done before hand. i might take the cougar one out anyway and have gears installed and swap it right to the mav when its done. that way the mav doesnt have to be down for any extended period of time
