Hey all, I tried to do a rear diff fluid change on my 70 today and I don't think it has been done since 1970, it was like thick mud with mettallic sparkles in it. Anyhow since the diff is sealed I stuck a straw connected to a pump that runs on vaccum in it, it very slowly sucked that stuff out but often clogged. After 20 min of this I got frusterated, put in some BG lube stuff I bought and some 80/90 rear diff stuff and sealed it up. Total I think only a quart came out, how much should there be? I think there should be more so I am hoping this new stuff will dillute the old stuff and it will come out faster and cleaner next time. Is there a easier way to do this or am I doing it right?
Got a bigger straw? If your rear is the intregal type (has a removable rear cover) just loosen the bolts, pry open the cover and drain it. If you have the carrier type (removable center section) you'll need that bigger straw. Seriously, I have heard of some guys with the same problem pumping kerosene into it to dilute the old oil. Not sure if that would affect any seals or anything, but I certainly wouldn't drive it like that. Good luck.
Jiffy Lubes have a suction pump to pull the fluid out. To me. it's not worth the effort unless you pull the axles and driveshaft and crack the seal.
