I am guessing that this has been brought up before on this forum, but I did a search and couldnt come up with anything...so here goes... Well, my mav runs and drives...and we are starting to prep for paint. But I still need to do my front disc conversion which will convert the front to 5 lug, so naturally I need to do the rear. Right now I am sitting on a 9in 70 Mustang rear, but I am thinking that I probably wont need all that in the rear, and it might cost alot more money to get the gears, and posi setup in the 9in than possibly going to a 8.8 rear. I have access to getting a couple different rears 88 Turbo Coupe Rear with disc, or 89 Mustang with drum. I was wondering which would be a better option as far as $$, and width... Or if there is something better out there that is readily available I was wondering what I should be looking for. Fabrication as far as welding spring perches in and such doesnt scare us... Also, a little off this subject....how do you guy/gals feel about the wheel adapters to fit newer style rims off an 05 mustang onto a 70 Mustang?? We just started another resto on a 70 Mustang Convertible....and we have 05 mustang GT rims hanging around the house...Wondering how safe the adapters are.... Thanks in advance for any help with this... Diana
diana, you could run a stock mav. 3:00 gear, 5 lug and put a powertrac in it. that will be the easy way. looking at $500-$600 bucks ...JMO... frank...
Diana, The 8.8 is a good little rear end, lots of parts and decently priced too. I concidered it before finding an 8in. Couple things to remember...... Its wider so you might need a shallow back spacing (if I remember correctly it was something like 4" overall versus the maverick),even worse with a turbo coupe (like 3/4" wider than fox body version with drums). If you decide to go with the turbo coupe rear end....grab one out of an automatic (3:73 gears) I think the stick cars had 3:55's hope this helps, memory's not as good as it used to be P.S. "Good" Adapters are made out of 1" thick aluminum and are usually strong enough. I think the new mustang wheels look great! Seen alot of older mustangs with the "bullit" wheels, they look good too.
"The 8.8 is a good little rear end, lots of parts and decently priced too. I concidered it before finding an 8in. Couple things to remember......" If the rear end is wider, wouldn't that mean that your backspacing would increase and not decrease? Yep it would mean a deeper back spacing.
Well, personally, I don't like C-clip rearends (8.8"). The '70 Mustang 9-inch is almost 3-inches wider, so it will push the rear wheels outward approximately 1-1/2" on each side (a little much for my taste). My suggestion to you is to find yourself an 8-inch 5-lug rearend from a '71-'77 Maverick or a '75-'80 Granada. It will be cheap, plenty strong, have a good track width, and bolt right in...
wheel adapters are fine for cruising and daily drivers...... Just as long as you are not pouring tons of horsepower to them or running the autocross at your local tracks.
The mustang rear is a bolt in deal. The 9" and 8" rears are way easier to set up than an 8.8. If you want to use the 05 wheels, then I would go with the 8.8 because you wouldnt need any adapters on the rear.
by the way, because your a lady i wont say too much other than people have asked several times for the size of and opinions of their rear end on this site.
I've heard many say those wheel adapters are "good enough" for a daily driver, etc.. When I'm running 80 mph down the interstate, going over bridges that sometimes bottom out my car, I would hate to think I have adapters holding my wheels on that are just "good enough". My dad knew a guy that broke one just doing a burnout. Get wheels that fit right.
He bottoms out because Georgia DOT hasn't figured out yet that the bridge is supposed to be the same height as the roadway!
kind of like the high dollar highways in cali. here in nevada our highway taxes are lower, it snows and we scrape, but the road seems to stay smooth as glass. as soon as i cross the border, thumpa thumpa bumpa thumpa. gets old quick.
Exactly! That and I've got 170 front springs with a 250 engine. The suspension dosen't really bottom out, the exaust just scrapes the ground. Kentucky is the worst though IMO. Their bridges are lower then the road.
