    Hi all,

I am looking for suggestions on replacement rear springs for my 72 2 door Comet (green car below). It still has the original springs.

I am looking for better handling and load carrying capacity without raising the rear ride height much. I love the stance as it is, but put 100 lbs in the trunk and a 200 buddy in the back seat and it was draggin' ass.

A long time ago, a guy with a Maverick suggested using 4 door springs. I was wondering if anyone has done this and what their experience was.

Also looking for feedback on other options too.

    Thanks in advance ...

I got 4 leaf Espo springs on the back of my Orange car. Raised it up a little.

Got mine from Espo Springs and Things (www.espo.com) and I am very pleased with them. They come with the front bushings, but you have to purchase the shackle bushings. They costs about $200 complete with shipping.

    Earl

$200 is a great price. I have been watching prices on e-bay for a couple weeks and $250 plus $150 for shipping seems to be the norm I am gonna do something with mine as soon as the motor is running my local spring dealer said he will put an extra leaf in mine for 125.00 . and I just might do that but first I ma going to the ESPO web site and check there thanks for the info .

I bought 4 leaf springs from JC Whitney. They are much cheaper, but the only problem is that the shackle bushing OD (the spring ID) is larger than the stock size. I haven't put them on yet because l have to get larger bushing from a spring shop. I think that Dennis (Mavaholic) had this same experience. There's another thread on it somewhere.

ESPO is AWSOME! Service that knows what they are talking about with all the parts. I don't know about Mav. springs but my Aspen ones were about $20 cheaper w/freight and JC Whitney didn't have bushings just springs. Good Luck!

4-leaf from JCWhitney. May have lifted an extra 1/2", if that. Really just corrected the sag. About $200 3 years ago.

I am thinking of driving my Comet to Alaska next year so I need the extra springs to keep the rear from dragging. Then I will load it all up with my junk for the trip . I know the Car will be glad to get away from all the salt they put on the roads around here in Maine , Its like watching your car dissolve from an acid bath . LOL ~

Maine to Alaska...now THAT would be an awesome drive!!!

Going to do it mostly through Canada, or US?

I almost had a chance to move to Alaska, but it fell through. The wife and I were very upset that we had our hopes set on it for so long and it didn't materialize.

Danielle; my daughter and her family drove to Anchorage from Georgia in a 1964 Falcon I gave her when she turned 18. She is in the Air Force, and that car made it there, back, to S.C, and now to N. Dakota. Toughest old car I have ever seen. Good luck!

Where did you get the shackle bushings? Did you have a problem with the stock size bushings being to small for the JCW springs?

Thanks for the encuragment Earl . The thing I like about the Alaska Canada Hwy is that they have widened it and a lot of the corners have a bank to them .And with my Comet i feel better about being able to fix it myself if I have problems ,

Randy, I had no problems. I got the stock sized shackles and bushings from AutoKrafters. I think it was 3-1/2". Everything fit just fine...

I bought a set of 4 leafs from ESPO and it raised the back of my car about 3". First I put lowering blocks in there, then I had them dearched. Never did get it where I wanted it. Then I bought a set of 4 leafs from JC Whitney. Ride height was perfect. but, as Randy stated, the rear spring eye was bigger than the stock one. I tried contacting the manufacturer of the springs but they refused to deal with me. Called JCW and all they would do is take the spring back if I wanted to. Ended up making my own bushings. I'm not happy with the way the bushing turned out but its safe and functional. I am always looking for a better set.
