if you are talking non roller old hyd NO!!!!...but if there roller then yes if they look good and the roller are not bad or have hot spots
if it is a new cam then new lifters would be a good idea but not totally necessary. If it is a used cam then use the lifters you have! if you sliding in the new cam and/or this is a total rebuild do you really want to go back in for a bad lifter?
Please read the question.. Do NOT use HYD lifters on a new roller HYD cam unless the lifters are also roller. I agree with answer #2
You would see the errors of your ways when your lifters drop almost an inch further in the block than you anticipated and nobody makes a push-rod long enough to reach the rocker arms. Roller Lifters are quite a bit taller than regular lifters ...
my answer was only in reference to roller cams and roller lifters. In the case of flat tappet never reuse lifters on a new flat tappet cam. I have been running used roller lifters from one motor on a used roller cam from a different motor for years with no problems.
why on earth would you want to use USED parts for an engine... i mean... SERIOUSLY... its not worth the cam or lifter failing prematurly... sure it can be done.... but why the hell would you want to risk it.... dont get lazy and use old parts its just not worth it... Just my$.02
i was talkin about using old stlye hyd. lifter instead of using the hyd. roller lifters.p.s. thanks for all the help.
When I put my third cam in my engine, I went with roller. I got a set of used roller lifters from a buddy out of his 5.0 Mustang. New cam & used lifters. Been working great for over 3 years now.
I reused the roller lifters in my roller block too. Told the machine shop to check them out and make sure they were ok to reuse.
Reading the post again, it was not a question about using used lifters. It was a question about using hyd NON ROLLER lifters on a roller cam. Used or not, that will not work.
Scotty, you're right. He indicated above he was talking about the old style lifters. Maverickboy, if you get a chance take a look at a roller cam "lobe" and a flat tappet cam lobe side by side. The roller lobe is far more aggressive because the roller lifter can handle the rapid ramp speed. If you put the old style lifter in with the roller cam you would probably shear the lobe off or the lifter off. Not sure which. If you need a set of used roller lifters I have a set that are in good shape that I would be willing to part with for a VERY reasonable price. I have the matching 93 cobra roller cam to go with them!
