i have a 87 302 motor that i im coverting back to carb that im throwing into my 73 comet. parts i have is a: stock 87 mustang motor and head edelbrock f4b intake edelbrock 1406 650 carb mechanical water and fuel pump 85 mustang standard trans distributo w/ steel gear and msd rotor and cap kit front oil pick up and oilpan 50 oz. flexplate thanks a lot to maverick75. my question is, what do you do at the back of the heads where there are holes that are threaded and not? i think its for cooling but im not sure if they have to be plugged up or not, cause i dont want water or anything spraying all over the place.
They are for the secondary air system. On cold start air from the air pump is diverted into the exhaust ports for hydrocarbon reduction. In short, emissions controls that unless you are running an air pump, you don't need. A couple of guys have used bolts(5/8-11 thread according to the parts database) but the Ford part is still available at the dealership. The part # is F4ZZ-6E086-A they list for $26 ea. and you need 2.(ouch) You need to plug them or you will have an exhaust leak.
all i needed was the correct name of that port and it was such an easy find after that: Part # F4ZZ-6E086-A Youll need 2 of them. They are about 2.00 each. The size of the thread in the Thermactor Plug (part # F4ZZ-6E086-A) is 5/16-18. If you don't have the Thermactor Plugs in the heads, or you just want to pick up some bolts instead, you can use a 5/8-11 x 3/4" long bolt from your local Hardware Store to plug the hole in the head. 5/8's = size 11 = threads per inch, 3/4" = length thanks guys
