My car was originally a column shift, i was reading that the tranny arm on the side , that the linkage hooks too has to be turned so that its pointing up? is this true, in order to put the original floor shift in?

Yupper. The column shifter pushes the linkage towards the rear of the car when shifting from park to low. The floor shifter pushes the linkage foward.

    :hmmm:  ,
i took my '73 grabber to my tranny man this morning to get the lever flipped. when i called him about 3pm he said he had to get me the shift lever from another tranny because the one i had would not work when flipped. ...as we all know my "stuff" is different than anyone elses...i could buy a pair of shoes and one would be 9 1/2 the other 9 3/4.that is just the way things have always been with me. i think the only reason my marriage is so great is because it ain't suppose to be...:yup: ..
i will pick the car up tomorrow and see what was diff. about the lever...frank...:bouncy:

Generally the offset is different. Sometimes you can make it work, sometimes you can't.

I have the arm off of an 80's mustang ( I believe, I can check with Robert ) on mine. Only problem with it is it sticks out from the tranny case a bit far, so I had to BFH the tranny tunnel 1/2" or so because it hit when the shifter was all the way one direction (I forget if it was Park or 1st)

Somewhere I have a floor shift arm out of a Granada. I got it to put in my 77 which I no longer own. I'll see if I can find it this weekend.

He confirmed it's out of a fox body mustang, and he has a couple more in his toolbox if you need one.

Frank; now that you mention it, my tranny man (5yrs ago, and a crackhead, now in the slammer), had to replace the shifter arm also. He got one from a mustang, but don't know what year. He did build a good trans, though.
