I have a 75 maverick 250i6, and when I am on the highway, when I hit 60-70 mph on the interstate, to pass someone, my steering wheel starts to shake pretty bad. And it's a pulsating vibration, as in it come in predictable sets. Any clue what could be causing it? Motor mounts?
I just had the tires balanced and the rotors aren't warped. Those were my first thoughts. Ujoints maybe?
Doubtful, steering sector may have excessive play and/or idler arm or other steering component is loose... Also a tire can be out of round and still balance but shake at speed...
I had the same problem and it ended up being the idler arm, more than likely it is a worn component in the steering
I suggest taking the car to a competent shop/s and have the entire front steering and suspension inspected. Most likely in these 40yr+ cars most if not all of these components need replacing/upgrading.
Is there a brand yinz prefer? I don't wanna buy the duralast brand, I've had nothing but trouble with them
moog is the best, they even have a problem solver line that improves on the factory deficincys in design. they used to offer a upper control arm bushing problem solver kit but its disconinued about 2 years ago last i checked. i was able to find some of them in stock at rock auto. they also offer a problem solver idler arm. i havent checked on its availability recently.
i found the moog problem solver idler arm part number: k8245 it appears to still be available. this replaces the rubber bushing with a greasable bearing. i would highly recommend everybody to do this upgrade.
it comes with a grease fitting. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=203317 i dont see any reference to it not being greaseable.
