Replacing U Joints on my 73' Comet with C4 Trans and I discover that the slip Yoke has a Metal Ring that seems to be pressed onto it with (Rubber?) that is starting to crumble. Factory service manual does not show this as my slip yoke. Any ideas if: 1) I should be concerned about the ring falling off? 2) Is this really a stock part?

I can't say I've seen ones with the damper as far back as '70s but were common on the late '80s 5.0 T-birds, probably others. Because I was running my T-Bird at track I knocked it off. But without out it, D/S should be rebalanced.

Do you think it will stay on even though the (Rubber?) looks questionable? Also, Are Generic Aftermarket replacements available? When I search based on my Car type I come up with nothing.

    IIRC I had a 75 Maverick 302/C4 with a very similar shaft.

I've always wondered what that is for, and if it's really necessary.
Did you have to get your drive shaft re-balanced after removing the ring?...

Nope. I could not tell/feel any difference other than that weird sound went away.
