    Hey all,

Inquiring about a 76' Maverick with a 250 and C4. Owner indicates the transmission works when cold, but slips to uselessness upon warming up. What are the chances a servo adjustment ?? might solve? 1/10? I see rebuild kits on ebay and while I haven't messed with a transmission before, these sound similar to a motor rebuild, which I feel comfortable with.

    5-bolt with a clean 250, asking $2,000.

    Chris

smell the tranny fluid to see if it smells burnt. It should have a dark red tint. If you see metal particals in the fluid try an get him down on price. These trannys to rebuild only cost 300.00 with a reman torque converter.

In my area at least you can't get a good rebuild for less than $500.

Even the best engine rebuilders are generally lost once inside a automatic trans... At least have to do some studying...

Years back I rebuilt a couple C4, isn't really difficult just have to be CLEAN and keep parts organized... I swept out garage and covered floor with paper, when I got it apart I had a life size, exploded view just like in shop manual...

This is not a task for a novice. It takes specialized tools.

...just in case, but I'm sure that you already checked.
If you have low fluid, it's sometimes possible that you have transmission engagement when you first start up, but as the transmission fluid pump fills all the cavities & galleys, there isn't enough for the fluid switches & torque converter.
Always check when warm & running.
