Over at the FordSixPerformance forums there is a lot of discussion on performance upgrades to the small block six used in Ford Falcon, Comet, Mustang, Granada, Bronco, Econoline, , Fairlane, Meteor and a few others including the Maverick. My current small block six project uses a '74 Maverick: Using a Maverick as a donor, used the BOP setup on the stock 250 to finish fitting and accessories for the turbo. The Maverick 250 only has DS-II/HEI upgrade and otherwise is all OEM 74 250 . Started right up with oil press at turbo, , idled and ran ran surprisingly well static while I chased down leaky coolant and oil line gremlins before attempting drive. Driving performance is similar to unboosted 250 with adequate low end torque but as boost builds at mid throttle there is an additional powerband never available NA. I have not modified the distrib. yet other than severely retard static timing so limited my boost driving to data and performance but still managed to blow the OEM muffler apart after some more testing... have fun . . . . . . . . .
I like it. Some things to ponder here. Boost is tougher on the valve-springs ability to effectively seat the valves. The valve-springs used on these cylinder heads are subpar for ANY performance engine even when they were in new condition.. much less used as they are now. Not only can this create fuel metering and tuning issues.. but it can also send fuel out the exhaust.. which can cause popped mufflers. Heavily retarded timing can cause that same result too. What did the turbo and inlet come off of?
Adapted to the inline six in the pics is late 70's to early 80's Buick/Olds/Pontiac V6/V8 draw-through carb'd setup . The specially ported for turbo Quadrajet is on the 79 Buick manifold to the Garrett TBO3 turbo. I adapted the some of the Buick V6's exhaust but haven't worked out the height of hood scoop. If I swap in a small block 200 it is @1-3/4" shorter than the stroked 250 height and may gain RPM/boost capabilities . Fuel Injected / blow-through / inter-cooled turbo is recommended for max durability but the draw-thru setup right still can add considerable power .
