Please forgive my ignorance, as I am a Maverick "newbie", but what is the scoop on Brazilian Mavericks? Did they make them for more years than here in the States? Were they made with different options and safety requirements? I notice that many pics of Brazilian Mavericks have no side marker lights and most or all appear to have small bumpers, front and rear. Please inform the uninformed. Thank You, Gene
There are a lot of subtle differences from what I see. It's the grass is always greener thing I guess. They did get 4 speeds I believe as did the Mexican cars.
Bunch of minor, cool differences. Let's see what I can recall... They were made through '79 in Brazil. They never got big bumpers, no Comets either. No marker lights. Different option packages. 4, LDO, Super Luxo, GT. The GT was like our Grabber. Had the Grabber hood, had its own neat stripe package. Straight stripes along the body line like a Grabber but without the wheel arches. Then the "Phase II" GT had a hockey stick stripe similar to a Boss. Both stripes had "302 V8" cut into them. Speaking of Phase II, which I think started in '77, those all got new taillights that we never had. You could get a 2.3 4 cylinder in Brazil. They didn't get the same sportlamps we had. Theirs are mounted in front of the grille. They had a grille that we never got, with vertical slats. They did get the medallion grille we had, but they had different emblems in them depending on trim level. In Brazil, the Maverick logo has no horns. Why? Something about a man "with horns" meaning his wife sleeps around. Their radios were mounted in the dash where our center AC vents are. They had a glovebox in the dash. Like literally in the dash like a proper glovebox and I bet you could actually put things in it. They could get a factory tach. It was mounted on the column and made in the same style as the speedometer. They could get "SVO" side skirts, and I'm not sure whether those were dealer items, aftermarket or original equipment, but they're bitchin'. They had a nice piece of trim between the taillights on some models that really looked good. The F O R D letters we got on our hood lip were all moved over to one side on their cars. That's all I remember right now without searching. Now let's not even talk about Mexican Mavericks... 289's, 4-speeds, Dana rears, and allegedly even a Shelby model. (Allegedly the are Chupacabra down there too though, which you're probably more likely to run into than a Shelby Maverick.)
The trunk floors are also different, they have a spare tire well. [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dCs4-5uzoU"]YouTube - Maverick GT[/nomedia]
I know one you missed. In Brazil they also had a Maverick station wagon. Every once in a while, one pops up on Ebay but it would be extremely expensive to ship it here. Someday, I just know it, One will show up in the U.S. by some one who has a lot of money. HINT, HINT Ray.
Thanks folks. I was just curious and any/all info when starting down a new road with a new car model is helpful for ideas on what to do. I will hopefully be getting my Maverick in the near future and will keep you all posted with info, pics, questions, etc. Thanks Again, Gene
That is aftermarket. More info on the Brazilian Maverick. http://www.maverick.to/np-foreignmav2.shtml Some pictures of the differences http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=45950
