I am attempting to put rear discs from a 99(i think) Explorer on my 72 Mav. The problem is that the flanges on the axle dont match up with the holes on the explorer backing plates. I was thinking of reclocking the backing plates by redrilling the 4 holes. This would also allow removal of the calipers without seperating the the axle from the springs. What do you guys think. I paid nothing for the explorer parts so if it is a no go I wont feel bad. If anybody has used jeep rotors for this swap please tell me all the parts needed to go that route. Thanks in advance for any help. BTW, my car might have had 4 lug axles, but the previous owner changed them, not sure though.

I was hype on doing this mod, but it appears that the small bearing 9" (same as 5 lug 8") housing ends will not work. At least not bolt on.
The Stang board members say they are having to use new style (Torino) housing ends to get these to bolt on.
Redrilling the holes sounds like a plan to me. But I don't know enough about it to say it will for sure work.
    Good luck
    Dave

Fwiw: If I had gotten the parts free, I would try the drilling.

    can of worms

Thanks for the replies. Upon closer inspection I found the stock 28 spline axles about to twist in two. After a call to Moser and Currie, I have 31 spline axles, 31 spline spool, 9'' housing ends, and correct bearing retainer plate spacers on the way. I would say that the old setup held up well despite years of heavy nitrous and street racing. Hopefully it will stay together for more abuse.(I mean fun)

Don't use a spool on the street.
    Dangerous and destructive.

The car has had a spool in it for over 8 years and seen a lot of street miles. Car does not get driven in rain(no wipers)

Yeah, rain is what will get you with a spool... quick.

That explains your damaged axles though.
Axles and tires take a beating with a spool on the street.

    Good luck
