About 4 days ago i took my car to a mechanic to get my 4bbl and intake manifold put on( in case your wondering why i took my project car to a mechanic, im 16 and nobody around me knows anything about cars) in the end it cost me 400 dollars to get them put on and 2 days later my intake gaskets blew out and my piston rings started leaking oil(he put 5w20 oil in my car an somehow that messed them too. so now i have chosen to do a complete engine rebuild but i dont know where to start. i need to know what kind of pistons, heads, cams go good in my car. i am not making a insane strip car i just want a fast street rod HELP ME!!!!!!!!!! thanks, josh
Hi Josh, I would suggest getting a crate motor instead of building one yourself. If that's beyond your budget, pick yourself up a junkyard 5.0 from a late model Mustang. You will be very happy with the results and you will learn a bit about motors. Oh and don't be intimidated, I started about the same age building cars myself.
My suggestion would be to get a book on "How to rebuild your small block ford". There's a couple of them out there that are pretty good. Changing the oil should not have started the oil leaking. Make sure you have all the tools necessary to do the job. THese books talk about what tools you need and what ones can be rented. Good luck.
i think there are other factors at work here. deep down the internals of your motor might be ok. then again im always suspecious of other ppl working on my car. espically if the thing they worked on messes up so soon. if you can get a old maverick chiltons book theres also alot of info and pics about tearing into your 302 along with the rest of the car good luck
Step 1. Take your ride back to the mech who put your intake & carb on. Tell them to fix it. It was there mistake. You put down $400.00 for the job and you want it right. If they won't fix it.Call your BB and tell them what happen. I don't see how the oil blew past your piston rings. Step 2. TAKE THEM TO SMALL CLAIM COURT. Good Luck Tony
I don't see how changing the intake could ever make oil blow past the rings. they probably didn't tighten the manifold corectly i.e torque sequence, and now you have antifreeze in your oil because it transfered via the bad intake job. drain the oil out of your car, NOW! BTW, being 16 is not a good excuse for not knowing what kind of a project you took on, get a couple of books, start getting the mags, it's not as hard as you may think, I've been toying with cars since I was 6, 20yrs later, I'm still playing with them, and learning new things. I still read the books and mags, there is always something new to learn, or try. keep on trucking, but get that bad oil out of the bottom end and get fresh in there before you wipe out a bearing, that would require a total rebuild. Shaun
Maybe from sucking gasket material into the cylinders? Whatever happened, it sure sucked! I hope your mechanic makes it right. Keep us updated!
