What is the easiest way to get the @ss end of my comet up in the air without hanging ugly shackles on it?
JCWhitney has the 3 and 4 leaf rear springs for 55 dollars a side. That's what I have. (Just gotta put them on) Good luck!! Preston
What's everybody got against shackles? And air shocks? I love the look of JC Whitney-style add-ons...gives it a beefy look without (necessarily) giving it any beef. When the guys at the track see my shackles, they know that when I finally replace the stock bicycle tires, I will have room to grow... DAMMIT! How come I can't enter pictures or hyperlinks to show my pictures? Any suggestions as to why when I click the hyperlink or Insert Image buttons, it clicks to a new screen and erases the text I have just added? My website is www.geocities.com/scottcodon@sbcglobal.net Go to September to see my shackles etc. Meanwhile, I will try to figure out why I can't use the mav/comet Forum's buttons correctly.
Shackles place tons more stress on the suspension components and will cause them to prematurly fail. They also look ugly sticking down. To lift the rear up, do it correctly with new springs. I am not a fan of the jacked up back look as it places way too much weight on the front suspension causing problems like crappy steering, terrible braking and way too much weight in the front than the suspension was designed to handle. When braking, the rear brakes do pretty much close to nothing with it that far in the air as most of the weight it shifted towards the front. I also think it just looks terrible. Who wants to see the complete underside of your car when they are behind you? But, to each there own, and I totally respect that. Basically, get new springs (No Shackles!) and be done with it. -Corbin
For years I headed the advice and never ran shackles or air shocks. What I did was take 2 floor jacks and lift each side equally. Then took off the handles of the floor jacks and I just rode around with the floor jacks raising my car up. Did that for bout 8 years. Went thru 687 sets of wheels for the floor jacks, but damn, it was cool. Dan ps you guys can live in 2004, I am staying in 1970 naa, naa, naa, na, na,na naaaaa, na, na, na, naaaaaaaaaa hey Jude...................
Leave the rear low!! Lower the front end to the level that gives you the stance you are looking for.http://www.maverickcometclub.org/2004roundup/DCP_3781.jpg
beleave it or not a friend of mine(it really was a friend) once jacked his car up with the bumper jack and put muffler clamps around the shocks, made for a real rough ride though
Honestly, I am jacking the rear to give room for larger tires, not for a "jacked up" look, as I also don't like to see under the car. I am using the air shocks just for an extra inch or two lift. Currently, my car looks pretty cheesy, jacked up with the stock tires and rims, looks like I am driving around on those tiny spares the new cars have. But, I am saving up for some 16x10s to slip under there with lots of rubber. Again, I cannot send attachments, for some reason. I guess I ought to change my name to "ol' Fart" cause I'm stuck in the 70's, I've got air schocks on my '73. I'm running M50 tires on the back and don't want to become up to date by tubbing the car. Course the air schocks may be the reason the dang things are trying to come through the trunk. But once this is fixed I keep the schocks.
I put load control springs on my rear shocks. It brought the rear end up just above level & doesn't affect the ride at all. No need for air shocks or shackles!!!
Once upon a time I got some leaf springs off an old Ford station wagon at a junk yard. Kept my stock large upper leaf on each side but removed the two smaller leafs. Just added the "new" leafs on to that. The rear was higher than my waist, and I'm 6'6", and the shocks wouldn't extend far enough to bolt back up! Looked like one of those cars you see on T-shirts. The idea here is that maybe you can just add a leaf from another car to each side to get the look you want without resorting to shackles or air shocks.
