I want to install a push button starter switch in my Mav. What size, amperage, switch should I use? I want to wire it to the Starter Relay. Similar to a remote starter switch. The ignition key will be used to turn on all the accessories but not the starter. Thanks, Ken
Since you are planning on still using your existing key switch (which is good for security reasons) , you will be able to use a momentary SPST single-pole-single-throw switch. I'm sure there are lots of them out there. A quick search shows: Pegasus Racing Makes a 40 amp one, oversized for inrush current: http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/2011/062.pdf bottom of the pdf catalog page. 10 bucks. For those that go farther with an Off/Ignition/Start switch, they have a switch that has three positions to cover all three, with Down as off, Center as on, and Up as a momentary-contact on for the starter.
You should block the accesories (normally on with the IGNITION but off when cranking) so you don't cause problems with low voltage while cranking your engine.... Electronics are infamous for not tollerating repeated low voltage "brown-outs".
I put one in mine when my ignition switch flaked out a few years ago. The starter solenoid draws just under 4 amps, IIRC. Got a momentary toggle switch at Radio Shack for about $5.
