i was wondering what people had stereo wise in the mavs. so far i just have sony xplods on the rear deck and a pioneer in the dash. im going to get a new head unit but not to sure what will fit or will work. do i need custom wiring? if so who should i go to. does anyone have subs in thier cars? what are the ratings on subs/amp. did you have to change out the alternator and battery?

just curious for future reference when im looking to put a "system" in the Mav. and if anyone is wondering i dont listen to rap mainly rock and a little techno.
    thnx

I got the super original am. Now that Rush is off the air though, I'm thinking of upgrading.

Rush will be back. Don't fret.

I have original am/fm 8 track Ford units in my Mavs. Nostalgia and stuff.

The only time you'll have to worry about wiring and current drain is if you're going to go with an amplifier. They can pull some amps and the electrical systems in the Mavs aren't designed for that kind of drain. You can't put a lot of extra stuff on a 60 amp alternator. If you are going that route, you'd have to upgrade to a higher output alternator. Don't forget about the voltage regulator if you go that route.

Wes is right on the money. Any head unit will work just fine as far as amperage is concerned with the stock mav electical system. The really thumpin sounds are usually powered by multiple amplifiers or dual style amps with crossovers. When you get a system that pulls 40 amps and you have a 60 amp alternator on your car, it isnt long before you suffer shutoff from the amps and no start from your drained battery. Nice sound systems in cars dont happen by accident. Usually a good plan is devised and implemented. What I like to do is leave the stock radio in its location and then install and hide a din style cd player head unit n the glovebox. 6x9's in the rear package shelf and some asst stuff up front depending on the car. Got to have the highs and mids goin on too! Then on subs in the trunk, well there is not any way of hiding it unless you build a false wall between the seatback and the area forward of the well of the trunk. You can probably put a couple 12" subs there, dont know if you could get away with a ported box in that location though. But you could port the package shelf. Used to do this stuff for a living and dont even pay much attention to it now, cept when I spy a real nice install at a car show. Saw some nice installs at the Roundup.

    Dittos.....Rush will be back.

I am installing a 12" dual voice coil MTX sub behind the rear seat of my orange '72. When completed...all speakers will be "stealth" with only the head unit visible.

i wanted to go with either 10 or 12 inch sony explods and a 1000 watt amp. i dont really want to spend tons of money on subs but i just want something that when some one hears it they say hey thats not bad for an old car.

any reccomendations of brands, sizes, and power ratings?

what are you going to do to run all of that maverick5946?(batt alt ect) what kind of subs&amp are you gonna have?

Subs are MTX/ 6x9's are Rockford/Phasgate(spelling) amp is infinity. I am going with the 100 amp 1-wire alternator. I have no back seat, I am going to fit a piece of 1/4 or 1/2 wood around the cage. Cut holes, carpet and wire it for sound. This system is in the "boogie van" right now and sounds pretty good. I get alot of looks from the "thumpers" when they roll by at a stop light and I look at them, smile :D and crank-up Kid Rock, Eminem, Jay-Z, Jackyl or whatever Adam might have in the player at the time!
Big industrial size cargo van crankin' out the tunes! ;)

I am sure many of you already know this, but for those that don't:

Build a sub enclosure out of 3/4 particle board. Not plywood, not OSB (Oriented Strand Board)...but actual particle board (made up of finely grain sawdust and glue). OSB and plywood vibrate....particle board does not. Particle Board = Great for speaker enclosures....lousy for construction of shevles, house sheeting, roofing material, etc.

Now if you really want to get complicated, you need to figure the "volumn" (as in space) of the enclosure or box. There are books that can help with this. The size of the speaker and the number of speakers determins exactly how big the enclosure needs to be to optimize the sound. Also, "tuning" of the "port" is required, which is no more than the proper length port tube. Again, there are books that help with this as well. I did all of this with the last sub cabinet I built for a car. This time, I am just going to mount it behind the seat and forget it!!! To much figurin' gives me a headache!!!

Two 1973 LDO Mavericks (one 4 Drag one 4 driving like Mad on the roads :) ) also have a 75 6cyl Stock! Ok, well sort of Stock :P
actullay press board is way better then partical board or ply wood. Now being someone who never like to buy anything already done i have to admit that even these days the pre-fabed boxes are done quite well. most speakers these days do not require the air space that they use to. there are some speakers out there as large as 12's that only require one cubic foot. i have always perfered s sealed box (non vented / ported box) i like my bass deep!

as for watts.. i belive you don't need anymore then 100 to 150 watts amp thats you can bridge to 300. back in the day when i wasn't deaf i ran 100 watts (unbridged) to two 10 inch subs in my maverick. i pulled 136 db or was it 137 db i can't remember but back then the world record was 152 db. so you really don't need alot of watts to have someone hear your car comming down the street not to meantion going deaf as well. oh yeah back in the day before "boom boxes" term was used... my trunk won best trunk in a mustang show. for my system.. lol

anyways my recomendations are this.. you can take it or leave it.

head unit: Pionner (not just becuase my two cars are sponsored by them either) get one with a low pass crossover so you don't need to buy a external crossover.

amps: i have always ran Hifonics never ever had a problem with them. also Rockford / The Punch amps are good too. becarful on what amps are rated at and were they are made. Most amps these days are made in thrid world countries and you get what you pay for! You'd be amazied on what amps are... big names!

subs: i have ran Rockfords, M&Ms (no longer in biz), Redlines (also no longer around), Hollywood soundlabs, MTXs, Pionners, and kickers. Now Kickers... I have had the best results with them! i also had two 12 inch kickers pro in my maverick it sounded not bad at all. also note this! if you do have a box in your tunnk it will sound 10 times better

Highs and mids: personally... i think a tweeter is a tweeter and a good name brand 6x9 is fine as well.. i just run pionner cuz well yeah...

Now you noticed i said i use to have this stuff in my car... Well in my older age now (well not that old) i have come to realize that a sound system in a maverick will not sound very nice compared to a new car. why? well ever heard a maverick trunk rattle not to meantion the key lock, lic plate, door locks and every other thing that rattles when you drive it down the fwy/.. well it will rattle 10xs more. so i kinda got on my nerves after awhile. Now i'm not saying that it won't work in a maverick.. cuz i'm sure if you dynamated the whole car and had a nice interior shop fab the trunk then well maybe yeah. Oh yeah not to menation the weight of the stuff.. my stuff weight over 125 lbs, amps, all speakers, box, dynamatt, head unit etc... infact people though the rear of my maverick was lowered but it wasn't.

anyways if you can get it to work which i know you can, you would have some cool sounds. what i run now in my maverick is just nice 6x9s and 4inch two ways in the kick pannels and a nice CD headunit... good enough.

below is a pic of what i used to have in my other car before it got totaled. thought about putting it in the mav however i thought it would be more useful in my everyday car in traffic... when every i get that.

    good luck!

I just went out and took some pics real quick of my setup. I have a pioneer head unit and pioneer equalizer, MB quartz mids in the front kick panels and tweeters molded in my door panels, a pair of 6" mids in the back, 2 JL audio 10" subs in a sealed box behind the rear seat, a 2x100 PPI amp running bridged and parallel to the subs and a PPI 4x50 to the other speakers. the amps are in custom ampracks on the sides of the trunk, the sub box is hidden by a removable cover that goes across the back of the trunk and the bottom of the trunk is carpeted over a piece of hard board to cover the spare tirewell. I'll see if I can attach the pics.

thanks for the posts and suggestions guys. ive been looking on the web and ran into a few package deals that i would like some opinions on.

i like this first deal because it comes with all the stuff i need minus the box and wires. i have a set of sony 6x9s and like the quality so i was interested in this.and if i purchased it this way i wouldnt have to think about compatibility opinions?
