Me again! Now I'm focused on getting the backup lights to work. Replaced the bulbs and that did not help (both bulbs were broken). Also scrubbed the inside of the bulb housing to clean up some of the crud that was in there, possibly prohibiting contact. Now they are shiny! Still no change. Next, put the voltmeter on the inside of each housing, one lead on the one side, the other on the other side -- no volts. This was done with the car key in the accessory position and the shifter moved into reverse. So, my old man suggested checking the switch for reverse. Does anyone know where that is? We suspect it is inside the steering column -- if so, I'm done with that project!! Second question: does anyone have a wiring diagram for this car? Third question: who wrote the best repair manual for this car?? Thanks for the ideas folks! Jim
The switch is externally mounted at the base of the steering column, on top. Pretty easy to get to. Chiltons makes the only manual thats half way decent. Craig usually has a bunch for sale or check Ebay.
Anbody ever tell you that you are one handy dude? I'll check ebay for a manual. As for the location, you mean I can see the switch and test it by getting under the dash and looking up into the bottom area of the steering assembly? Sweet! Jim
The switch might also need adjustment. Have somebody move the shifter into reverse and into neutral....then back again into park. while they do that....you hold the terst light to the wire leads. It could be the lights are coming on while the car is halfway between one of the gears. I have Chilton manuals for sale..........email me directly if interested.
Thanks to the link to the wiring diagram posted by markmav, I was able to trace the wire today (yellow and white) to my fuel level gauge. Now my fuel gauge is fully functional.
