My son just picked up a T5 trans out of a 88 Mustang. Now he wants to put in in his 71 mav. The motor is a 78 302. My question, What bell housing will I have to use to get this thing in ? and is everything else pretty straight forward?

    Thanks Willy

You will need an adapter plate available from any Mustang supply house. After that you will have to fabricate a trans mount and have your driveshaft shorten.

    or...

use the bellhousing from the 5.0 car.
Windsor-Fox may have the tranny mount
    that will work.

Driveshaft will probably have to be
cut if you use the adapter plate.
1 inch shorter for toploader 4spd.
    to T-5 in a 65-70 mustang.

They advertise in Mustangs and Fords.

You can just use the bellhousing from the 5.0, depending on your clutch setup. There is a modification online for the mustangs involving a plate that converts from the pull type to the push type. It is a lot cheaper than a whole bellhousing. As for the mount, i used a c4 tranny mount (bolted right on to the t5) which lowered the tranny enough to where you might not even need to modify the x-member. As far as i've seen, the custom x-member is required for some mav's and not for others (mine needed it). I guess it just depends on the car.
You will need to shorten your driveshaft.
I have done the t5 swap and it was not difficult, but not easy either. I used a hydraulic clutch setup which made things considerably easier. You can email me at CACollo@hotmail.com with questions.

If you Mav is already a stick, why change the bellhousing? just get the adapter plate and fit it. You should be able to use the stock clutch linkage and just mount the trans. Cable or hydraulic is ok if you are starting with an auto trans car. KISS (keep it simple stupid).
