Thanks to Dave and others for help on reverse lights I have been silently going crazy trying to figure out why my reverse lights quit working. I had checked the bulbs, the wires, the neutral safety switch, everything but still no lights. So one night I'm seaching for the answer and up pops a thread Dave replied to about the radio backlight being part of the circuit. I had replaced the original AM radio with a 1984 Ford radio a while back but only recently realized my reverse lights were not working. I never would have thought to look for the power there. So thanks to Dave and others for helping the rest of us with answers. I rarely start a job on my Comet without researching it here first to see what I am in for. Thanks to all those guys on here for sharing.
So how/what did U do to fix the BU lights? I have the same problem. I don't know whether the neu. safe sw is part of the problem cuz my car will only start in park. Also, I have an aftemarket radio. I have not gotten arnd to examining the problem yet -been to busy working on other things and driving the car. I don't really consider the BU lights a priority - I wud like to have them workin sometime in future.
i also have no idea what's going on with mine..so i hooked them up to work as brake lights and put red LED bulbs in
If someone cuts up the factory wiring, they can cut the circuit that feeds the reverse lights, then that's where the issue arises.
I replaced the original AM radio on mine with a 1984 ford radio and I used a harness for the 1984 one. There should be two wires, one is white (if i remember correctly) and one white with a purple stripe wire that feed the power to the radio backlight. The white/purple stripe wire worked for the reverse lights. I had only used the white wire for my new radio harness and left the other one tucked under the dash. So, I connected the white/purple wire to the blue wire on my new harness and viola, my reverse lights worked. The blue/pink wire from the original wiring goes to your radio light. Here is a good picture from another member of the original wiring that might help you. The right side wires at the top of the pic are the ones I used.
