ok, ive timed about a blue-million 302's before and have never had trouble untill i was trying to set the timing on my grabber today. i put the timing light on it and according to it, it's about 2 inches away from where it should be. when you attempt to put it in it's correct position, it wants to die and such.... a clear indication that something isnt right. and just fyi, im trying to set the timing to due excessive 'spark knock' at higher rpm's. the engine has a new roller timing set and is perfectly in time there, but the firing of #1 will not line up with the mark on the crank. here's the specs im working with: -double roller timing set -edelbrock performer cam -duraspark ignition system -going for 12' BTDC timing on the balancer w/o vacuum advance hooked up ok, any thoughts gentlemen?
Damper may have slipped. Never can double check timing chain enough! If you have adjustable timing light,, double check it is set to zero! If damper slip, rebuild it or pitch! That's one heck of a bomb coming apart!
I'd also check it and make sure that it isnt about to come apart. The two parts are bonded together with a rubber like ring. Make sure it isnt wobbling or the rubber hanging out.
i'll check it first thing tomorrow. if nothing else, ill just buy a rebuilt one. is this just about the only possibility? and my timing light isn't adjustable.
My humble opinion, yes. I'v seen some realy cost concious balancers out there. I think performance products or professional products cant remember exactly but, i know guys that bought them cheap and have good luck with them.
If you have a new timing chain set, then it pretty much comes down to the balancer. The rubber between the inner and outer parts gets old and the parts slip. Common problem. Probably it. Dave
thanks to all for their advidce. i will prolly end up getting one like this.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=011&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=320066728786&rd=1,1
I have a professional products damper works perfectly fine and timing is dead on and 3 sets of timing marks (we zero'd the piston and cam marked the timing set that lined up to the pointer and ran it) also I agree either the ring slipped the timing chain was making waves or your timing light is defective
Looks like a good deal on the ebay damper. Rebuilding is really just for guys who want to keep all FOMOCO. Rebuilding will cost you $75 and up. Here is damper doctor's link. www.damperdoctor.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=DD&Category_Code=HAR I like the aftermarket route. Dont forget your old damper is 35 plus years old and when they come apart, it aint pretty
That ebay one looks really nice. Much nicer than my stock one. Why would it have 3 sets of timing marks?
