Ok guys have a question for ya, while I was putting the puke tank on the car I had to crawl under it and I noticed one hell of a leak. I had a puddle of tranny fluid that stretched almost the width of the car. Now I know that a tranny gasket can start leaking after it sets for a period of time, but it hasn't been that long since I have driven it. While I still had the original engine in the car if it would sit for the winter I would always have a small puddle under it but once I drove it a few times it would seal up and never leak again.

But can a new gasket just let go like that:huh:

Try to localize where the leak is coming from, it can come from the pan gasket, the speedometer cable connection, front and rear seals, dipstick tube seal, or possible the servo cover gaskets....

New gaskets usually don't just 'let go'... check to make sure all the bolts are in snug (snug, don't overtighten! Overtightening causes just as many leaks as undertightening!)

The shift lever shaft seal is the first place i'd look!

If it is a seal, try a little brake fluid.
It makes the seals soften and swell.

My Comet is also leaking tranny fluid at the linkage seal. Is this going to require taking the pan off or can it be done externally? I ordered one today so I may attempt it this weekend. Anybody have a diagram they could post.

    Thanks Tim

Your going to have to drop the pan and the valve body. Messy, but not real hard to do. I think somebody has posted a nice schematic of the whole tranny internals, at one time. Can get it at your local library or invest in a Haynes Ford Tranmission overhaul book available at most parts stores. Send me a PM if you need detailed help, don't want to take up board space here.
