I have an FMX trans I am thinking about rebuilding. I have never done this so here are a couple questions. I can completely rebuild an engine, is a tranny that much more diff. The trans would shift fine if I eased into it. if I gave too much gas it would act like it was shifting into neutral. upon removing it from the truck to put in my mav I found the tranny mount was broke. would this allow the trans to move enough to pop it in and out of gear??? If it would, then all I will do is replace the clutch pack?? sorry to be so ignorant but gotta start somewhere :bananaman
yep, that'll cause one to pop out of gear. As per replacement, I'll let someone that knows tranny internals answer.
Normally, a broken rear mount will not let the engine torque over enough to pull the linkage into neutral. If the motor mounts are also bad, then it can happen. Course nothing is impossable on thirty year old equipt. Was wondering if the FMX is what you should use instead of a better C4. Either way you should get a good manual and the right tools to do the job. You should not just replace the clutch packs, the complete rebuild kit with seals gaskets and such, is relatively inexspensive. The hard parts such as thrust washers, drums and other internals that may need replacing, are also available but getting a bit harder to find in some cases. The valve body overhaul will be the most challenging of the whole thing, with all the springs, chedk balls and various valves to work with. But I am sure you can do it with the right tools and guide books that are available. Patients and cleanliness in the project will result in a job well done. Never had the chance to get into a FMX and don't know it it uses the same torque converter and flywheel bolt pattern as the C4 etc. May look into that first before starting the job, let me know too so I can add the info to my deteriorting brain. Good luck on your project.
The FMX came in 2 configurations.. Light duty for windsors and medium duty for cleavlands and FE's. Although the torquue converters wont interchange all bolt paterns for installation are the same. The FMX transmission is the basis for fords AOD transmission. with out overdrive of course. Very strong. actually can handle alot more torque than a C4. but I have never built one. always have a shop do it. was just wanting to delve into one. thanks for your reply's.
