I need help. Last week I was bleeding brakes and turned the front wheels as far to the left as possible. Then locked the steering and thought that would work until the steering wheel rotated back again. The column lock was useless! This is when the problem started, I thought the signal cam was bad so today I replaced it. Then I checked the fuse and it was blown. I went to NAPA and bought a pack and installed a new fuse. The signals worked and I thought I was good. Nope, the fuse lasted 3 seconds! What can I look for in the wiring harness to fix this problem? Any help will help, thanks. Ken
Hey Ken, Sounds like the 15 amp Circuit Breaker in the Headlight Switch is tripping. The Brake lights, and the Turn Signal lights, are not being fed from a fuse, in your Maverick. They are fed from one of the 2 circuit breakers, located in the Headlight switch. These are self resetting circuit breakers, so they can be tricky when troubleshooting light problems. The 15 amp circuit breaker, in the headlight switch is for the Brake Lights and Turn Signal Lights. The same 15 amp breaker, in the headlight switch, also feeds parking lights, marker lights, taillights, license plate light, horn, ect. Try letting the car set for a couple of minutes, so the breaker can cool down, and then check just one thing at a time, like just the brake lights held in, or just the left or right turn signal. This way, the circuit breaker might be good, and you might narrow the problem to just one of the individual light circuits. If every device on the 15 amp circuit breaker seems to be tripping the breaker, then you most likely need to change the headlight switch. I'm guessing the headlight switch is good, and you have a ground short somewhere in your turn signal swich, or cam plate. The other 18 amp circuit breaker in the headlight switch, is for the headlights, so turn on your headlights, and make sure they come on too. Good luck. Let us know how these tests check out.
I have turn signals!!!!!!!!!!! After changing the headlight switch and blowing another fuse I decided to take out the wire harness from the column. Long story short, there was a blue wire that had ground itself to the column. I fixed the wire, and now I have signals!!!!!! Thanks cactusgrabber for your help. I found an easy way to pull the headlight switch from the dash, just remove the temperature controller, next to the light and wiper switch, from the dash and reach in the opening to get to the light switch. It's easier then going from the bottom of the dash like the manual says. Ken
