Boy are my feelings hurt. Folks around my parts just don't appreciate a nice car when they see it. Only joking! But seriously, we had our annual car show yesterday and my car only scored 51 points out of a possible 100. Now does this look like a 51 point car?
We have a club for people like you....it's callled the Maverick/Comet Club International. http://www.maverickcometclub.org
Points scoring is for meticulously restored trailer queens ... You will get points deducted if all of the heads of your screws aren't lined up properly ... If you had a time machine and brought a car back from the original dealership to present today for a show it would be hard to get a 100 ...
Don't feel too bad. I live in Chebby country and most people around here look at a Ford as something for target practice. I used to go to the local shows here, but not too much anymore. Not only do the Chebbys out number the Fords ten to one, in peoples choice voting the people will pick a ratty looking POS Chebby over a pristene Ford any day. Even the local car clubs behave that way. I get my revenge by attending AACA shows were the judges have to vote by the book. That sounds like the type of show you went to. They can be real tough at those shows. Just remember one thing. Having fun at the shows is more important than winning anything. Don't get me wrong, winning or at least placing in a show is a great feeling, but it can't compare with the fun of meeting and talking to people and just having a good time. And here, EVERYONE'S Maverick or Comet is a 100 point car.
i have brought a lot worse looking cars than yours to events but i got it there. even that doesn't matter. guys come to the events without their cars. (YOU ARE BRINGING YOUR CAR THIS TIME RIGHT MARK?) doesn't seem to matter.you just went to the wrong event!
Yes.....I agree with all the above. I'm taking my 74 Comet 4dr to the Mini Meet next Sunday, even though it got hit by a lady running a red light last week. Didn't do a lot of damage, moved the bumper to the driver's side about an inch & put a dent in the pass door at the door handle (can't open from the outside). I'll just put the words "In progress" on it.
No offense to you, but yes, it actually does look like a 51 point car. Sure, it's clean and straight, and a nice color, but it has that awful green interior and it's a 4-door. You should be grateful that you got the 51 points. I'm sure there were other cars that got less...
I agree Jerry, the shows I have entered with my 4dr , were for my own satisfaction and the comaraderie of the other folks there. I tell the judges to pass on grading mine, thats for the trailer queens as stated before. Just from your pic's I would give you 99.9 points and certainly would not tell you to your face that any part of you car is not up to my standards. Be proud of what you have no matter what the condition or make and model, those that speak with forkeded tongue's usually are not worth even talking too. Teecee, just smile and think to yourself "Its mine and I like it, buzz off di**heads.) Where's my coffee!!!
Being into this car hobby for so long I really have seen alot. I have been showing cars since 1976. Also have organized many shows, judged a ton of um too. I can tell you when I judge, I do not care what make the car is. I dont care if it is 2dr or 4dr. All I know is what I am supposed to judge the car on. Many judges cannot get this in their heads. That is probably what happened to you Teecee. I like your car, looks like something that deserves to be shown to the masses. On the other side of it is this view point, and something to consider. The reason many car shows are going to participant judging is this. So many people nitpick the judges that what they have volunteered for now has become a pain in the A$$. I have never asked to see what my car received for points. I do not care. I dont care if I get a trophy, makes absolutely no difference to me. I go just to be around car people and see all the nice rides. Like I told a guy a couple years ago who was badgering me from year to year why his car would not place in trophy. He insisted we did not have enough classes (3 seperate classes for street machine, and 3 trophy's per class). I finally told him if he wanted a trophy he should either get his car to be nicer than anyone elses, or get a different car. He really got mad at me. Guess what? Next year he shows up with a detailed car to the max!! He placed. Dan
I was never expecting a trophy at all. It just aggravated me that it scored 51 points. It is clean as a whistle. ALL original. It gets thrown in the same class as a Olds 442 convertible and my car is as nice as the 442, MORE original, but judges let the type of car sway their opinion and that should not happen.
I have to agree that being put in the same classes as the Olds and Chebbys makes things pretty tough. But the biggest compliment I ever got was when a couple walked up to my husband and me and told us how nice it was to see something other than the usual run of the mill show cars. They said that seeing the same old thing show after show was, to them, getting boring and they thanked us for having the insight to try something different. That's what makes it all worth while for us. We turned my 77' Maverick into a show car just because it was different. We have found that a fairly large number of people appreciate seeing something different or unusual. And isn't that what being a 'Maverick' is all about?
I can tell you when I judge, I do not care what make the car is. I dont care if it is 2dr or 4dr. All I know is what I am supposed to judge the car on. Many judges cannot get this in their heads. That is probably what happened to you Teecee. Okay, read it again, I have a 4dr, have shown it. Same has happened to me. Just wanted to put a perspective behind it all from both points of view. Seriously, I dont think I have ever judged a car that low in my life. Sounds like bad judging to me. Dan
