With colder weather just around the corner, I'll be sanding my under carriage again. The areas already started have been POR 15 but I would like to top coat that with the correct factory finish. Should my Dearborn 72 Comet be red primer, body colour or dark slop Ford primer. Also should the trunk splatter paint be light or dark grey. Thanks
Thanks, it appears to be a flat or semi black with body colour over spray, I 'll follow this treatment. Just a side note I thought the mustangs were red oxide.
rthomas: Thanks for the pictures of that original car..nice. Hard to tell with the photos is it flat black ?
I'm not much help with the Dearborn cars, but my Kansas car has more body colour on the undercarriage than primer. The floor pans and undercarriage is covered in 45 year old undercoating on mine, but the area above my gas tank was yellow. I can see VERY faint evidence of red primer on the inside of my quarter panels.
Mike: I believe the car Jeff is referencing is the same low-mileage 70 that I have been refering to for detailing on my own. It's kind of misleading, because the body colour of that car is actually pretty darned close to red oxide primer...
There's no way with that much yellow under the tank that it could be over spray. Also sent PM to franktf hope he can add to the conversation.
Well that's two original body colour and one original black.....Hope to hear from others. There is very little original cars up here to be found.
Here's a link to Franks's Comet build, lots of chassis picts about 2/3 way down the first page... http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/my-72-comet-build.91278/
My '72 is a KC build and now painted black, but under the upper shock mounts is the original bronze body color...
Here's my 73 Grabber, California car. Under all the grime, it was white, and the tunnel was black. Kansas built, early 73. Here is my second 73, which was brown, with white stripes, after I cleaned the white off the floor, you can see the red oxide was over sprayed to the edges or the frame rails, and the rest was black, most was covered with white.
