I have the 302 in the ccomet running just one problem no rad hoses.I am useing the 6cyl rad for now and it has a 91 5.0 engine with the 90 deg thermostat housing.i have a spare 45 deg one if it would be easier. What do you guys use? Derek.
The parts houses around here carry the correct hoses. You would need the old style stat housing for those to work right. What side does the water pump point to on your engine? A stock Mav style lower hose will be for a driver side radiator outlet. Tip: Always use a lower hose with a spring in it. If you can't find one with a spring, rob one out of a used hose and put it in. Could save you a headache down the road. Dave
45 deg housing, to mate the 302 upper hose to the 6-250 upper rad inlet, i needed a reducer pipe. either an exhaust pipe adapter the right sizes or moroso makes an aluminum one. the 302 rad wouldnt need a neck down for the upper hose. lower hose wasnt a problem.
Wow, i must really be ghetto/trailer park trash. I used the 45 degree water neck and the 200 I6 radiator when I did my V8 swap. I slid the radiator 1-2" to the passenger side of the car and hooked everything up with a couple of spliced hoses and a pice of exhaust pipe (new of course) to hold the hose pieces together. No problems there. I slid it over to keep the fan blades from cutting the hose to shreds. Then lo and behold I was boneyardin one day and opened the trunk of a Mav and voila, a V8 radiator in all its "Brass and aluminum" glory. Then of course after finding the V8 radiator, I went and splurged on the correct hose for the V8 engine/radiator.
The water pump outlet is on the driver side,as is the rad outlet,i'll see if i can order the v8 mav hoses tomorow and change the water neck to the 45 deg one.Derek.
sounds to me you got the wrong radiator in it.. stock maverick outlets are on the pass side (i mean the top.. if we are taking about the same thing) so if you get a stock hose from the parts house it aint gonna work. this rad is the same set up as stock come out the the pass side.. also if worse comes to worst you can get a flex hose from cool flex or any old rubber flex hose
I ended up with an accordian flexible tube, which looks like crap, but has worked for the past 5 years.
Could someone expand on the "neck down" idea with the lower radiator hose? I would like to do it right, without having to cinch the crap out of the smaller end and using multiple hose clamps.
Go with the 45 degree thermostat housing. If you have the correct radiator and water pump then any parts house will have or be able to get the correct pre-formed upper or lower hose ...
The last time I bought hoses (before today) they gave me the accordian flex hoses both top and bottom. Today, I bought the correct hose for the top. I still have the accordian one on bottom, but don't want to hook it back up. The tube coming out of the engine (for the bottom hose) is larger diameter than the tube coming out of the bottom of the radiator. So, when I bought a hose, it had the larger diameter on both ends, so I had to use two hose clamps and it "blossomed" the end out (picture a rubber band wrapped around the middle of your pinky finger for 2 hours... ) on the radiator end. Do they make a hose with the smaller diameter at the radiator end and the larger diameter at the engine end? OR, do I have to do some "necking" to get a smaller diameter hose to fit at both ends.
The bottom hose will have the correct diameter ends when you buy the correct preformed hose. Like you said .. the end that goes on the water pump is larger diameter than the radiator outlet. Be aware that not all hoses ship with the spring insert ... something to keep in mind ... you want the spring in the lower hose before installing. I think NAPA hoses some with the spring ... others you have to re-use your old spring. Here is an NOS Motorcraft Lower V8 Maverick hose ... notice it is flared on one end for the waterpump. I am saving it for the day they have a Concourse Class at car shows for Mavericks ... The upper hose is the same part # as 302/351 Mustangs ...
Sorry to hijack, but can you buy just the spring? My hose is fine but the spring rusted out so I completely removed it fearing parts of it may get sucked into the water pump and possibly damage it. Since then I have had intermittent overheating problems.
