ok, got me a Versailles 9 from jack77 complete. all new brakes and lines...very nice. i was planning on going to pull a part and yanking me a chunk out so i can have decent gears. now heres my issue arent the versailles 28 spline and trucks are the 31? what should i look for?
I bougth a chunk from a member here I think his name was somethin Horse on ebay. Best thing I ever bought.
actually the versaille might be a 31 spline (trying to understand your question, its early) So any big cars i would say, like torinos would have low gears.
trucks can have both 28 and 31 spline. they will usually be 3.50 gears. 4x4s are usualy 31 spline so put more effort into checking the 2wd trucks. jut pull an axle and count the splines on it.
I would bet the best ratio you would generally find in one of these is 3.00. My 70 Torino Type N/W had a 4V Cleveland and it was backed by 3.00's. I would bet your best candidate for a decent set of gears would be a 2wd 1/2 ton with a 300 4 speed. That's where I found the 28 spline 3.50's for that car.
The center section, that I'm using in my 9 inch Versailles rear, is an "N" case from from my 72 Gran Torino Sport Q Code car. It had a 3.50 ratio stock. I did find some 4.11 gears in early Ford vans. Maybe very early 70's or late 60's. The last set I found had a traction loc unit in it too. So now my N case gets brand new 3.89 gears with that old van traction loc unit all nice and rebuilt.
Find your truck gear set you like and swap the spider gears to the 28 spline you have. Reset you back lash, done happy.
The majority of the 67-72 F100's I have messed with were 28 splines. A lot of the 302 equipted trucks used 3.25 gears which would work pretty good in a Maverick I would think. Some 6 cylinder trucks had 3.50 to 3.70 gears. If you change the side gears to match the axles you still have to make sure the outer bearings are the same. 73-79 trucks started using alot of 31 splines. I have seen at least 3 different types of outer bearings on the later trucks also clint
