I have an opputunity to buy a 71 Mav thats setup for big block drag racing.
There is some minor rust...mostly surface, Older 9" Ford axle narrowed, no differential, tubbed, ladder bar, single leaf, coil over suspension 11 point roll cage, entire car is tied together from front to back, complete mustang2 front end, stainless steel dash, steering wheel, fuel cell, battery setup in rearand kill switch.
Now its gonna take some work, its been sittin in a shed for years.
I'd like some opinions on what it's worth...I know it wouldn't be cheap if you did this from scratch.

My first thought is to the level of work done so far. Is the cage currently able to pass tech where you drag race? I will stick my neck out by calling it a rolling chassis and saying without seeing it is worth in the $1500 - $2000

That was my thought to Dan...alot of work has been put in it and more to do of course, with a differential it would be rolling. I would say it wouldn't pass tech if any rules have changed in 10 years or so...it's been sittin at least that long. It was definitely built for speed.

What type of axles does it have. Aftermarket or cut and resplined factory axles? I may have a stock 429 and a C6 available.

Don't know about the axles, surely they been cut as its been narrowed, I can check the splines, I think its the older 9" rear end as it has the inspection socket nut on the back side but the hog head pulls out from the front. I'm not sure I'm gonna buy it yet, much less what kinda setup to go with on the drive train. There's so much room under the hood I'd think you could put anything you want in it. The 427 with the C6 maybe a real goo combo.

427 stuff gets real expensive, I've got some of those parts also.

For eight grand, that 625 HP 514 crate motor from Ford would be a very trouble free and very consistent bracket engine. 625HP @ 6250 RPM, 600 ft/lb of torque @ 4800 RPM, and with a 9.8:1 compression ratio. That is the engine I would buy. Get an adapter and put a C-4 behind it. This set-up in a Maverick is a dream of mine and I may do it, yet.:bananaman

    Here's the specs:

I know there will be those who don't agree, but that is what makes this board great. VROOM, VROOM.

After you get a built big block in the car, then all you'll need is a lighter driver.:D (Yes, it is the pot calling the kettle black)(y)

sounds like a good deal to me if you want to run the big block stuff. that gets expensive though. the engine mentioned was a 429 not a 427. that's a little easier to find and most of the 460 stuff also fits. i guess it all depends on how fast you want to go and how thick your wallet WAS. you know the old saying. how to make a million dollars drag racing....start with two. good luck. :slap:

    http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=6188
Strange...LOL...with them kinda horses I could way 400 lbs and it wouldn't matter.
Don your right...but it's nice to dream...I can get the car for 1200 and work on it for a few years till I can afford this engine..needs alot of cleaning and refurbishing which is the cheap part.

Sounds like it'd be a fulfilling task - bb stuff too expensive for me though.

I'd guess $2k minimum without seeing the car - and that's near stealing it compared what amount of work had to go into the car.

hard to say without seeing the car.......sure sounds like a lot of work is done to it.....just figure what it would cost to get a car to where this one is.....and if this is something you want........they always say it is cheaper to buy one already done than doing it yourself......

It's cheaper to buy one done because you can never get out what you have in.

Any of you guys ever check out http://www.racingjunk.com

Lots of stuff on there. Saw a couple Mavericks on there a while back, one had a full chassis and set up for SBF/PG and ran 8.90's on motor. I don't think you can build for what you can buy for these days.

Make sure check everything out good. You could be buying someone elses problem. I'd find out if the car is straight chassis wise and the welds are good quality. I was told about a car like that once. When I looked at it the car needed more work to fix than I could have started a new one. It could be a good buy then again it there is a reason it is not finished.
