For a lot of years before I got a mig welder (when they finally came down in price for hobbyists) I used my arc welder and one of Eastwood's stitch weld attachments to weld sheet metal. It's basically a solenoid with a diode that pulls the rod in and out of the puddle real fast and cuts the power in half so that it doesn't overheat the metal. You don't even draw an arc to start welding, just lay the rod on the metal and the solenoid motion starts the arc. Doesn't work too bad once you get the hang of using it. http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1187&itemType=PRODUCT
