OK, I know that you aim it at the harmonic balancer, but where at on the 302 in my 72 maverick? There are the alternator, power steering pump and all the water pump etc. in the way and I cannot find the timing plate or a hole to shoot the light through. Am I missing something?
If it's still the factory Maverick engine, standing at the front of the car, it's down to the left, there should be a tab sticking out, over the balancer. Ford used 3 sets of timing marks for small block Fords, and Mavericks are the oddballs.
My factory pointer is on the driver side.....hard to get to, so I relocated mine to the passenger side for ease of timing.
I've got a picture of a 70's timing pointer in my photobucket link below. First pic is it. It bolted to the two lower timing cover bolts on the passenger side and protruded across the balancer. light was amied at the straight edged side and the mark you timed at lined up with that straight edge.
Your pointer was the leftover pre 70's pointer cast into the timing cover. Same cover was used after the switch with a stamped steel pointer bolted to the passenger side
