Website with sound clips...http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/sound.html OK, I am debating among the first three mufflers, the original 40, the Super 40, and the 40 Delta Flow. Any suggestions on what has been used and what really sounds good? I am trying to get away from the tinny sound the regular 40s make, and like the deeper sounds of the Delta Flow. But, I have only heard them on the website.... I recognize my 8:1 compression engine won't sound like 350s they are using on here (I assume it is the 350 that EVERYONE else drives ) The setup will be 6901 header toward the back, muffler, then downturns just behind the doorjamb. No crossover, no X-pipe, etc. 2-1/2" all the way out...
WOW!!! That didn't take you long to respond. I haven't even finished editing my original post Yeah, I am leaning toward one of the bottom 2, the super or the delta flow. Do you have a sound clip of yours, if you have them? (That goes for anyone else with suggestions... )
I run the original 40's. They are loud and obnoxious and I love it! Although, between 2500-3500 rpms there is a pronounced resonance inside the car.
I love Blow-Blasters. I'm partial to the 40 Series, 2-1/4" duals with an X-pipe on the 302 (5.0 as was my case). BTW, all the sound clips sounded the same on my pc speakers.
I lean toward th slightly quieter ones for the street, like the 30 Series. They have a good deep tone and are quieter to those inside the car.
It's like picking shoes. What one person likes is totally different from what the next guy likes. On mufflers and exhaust system sound quality, you're more interested in pipe diameter, where the muffs are at, cats or no cats, and X, H or straight duals. You can put 40 series on a Chevy truck and they'll sound like crap...change the way the pipes are routed and where the muffler is at and it actually sounds pretty good (experience speaking). Best sounding one I've heard was the one my brother bought from me. '74 Maverick 2 door...302/c4. Had a set of hedman cheapie headers that ran into some 2 1/2" pipes, then the X pipe which was also 2 1/2" in/out and the center of the X was directly under the front u-joint. From there it ran dual 3" pipes to the mufflers which were placed directly behind the step in the floor. Mufflers were 3" in/out Dynomax super turbos (welded) and dumped at an angle toward each other (not away from each other) right in front of the rear end. Quiet at idle, but when he'd get on it, you could definitely hear it. Sounded like a throaty 600+ inch big block when he was on the throttle hard. The ONLY other vehicle that I have heard that sounds better was a '02 Lightning that had 4V heads and a single turbo, no mufflers or cats, and single 4" exhaust that was pressed oval shape and dumped in the stock location.
i have the 40 series.. it has a nice rour to it when i get on it. and it is also a little quiet when on the road.
Flowmaster has a new one out super 44 I bought them for mine and hopfully by the end of next week I will know what they sound like
Keep em coming guys Regardless of what I actually DO, your suggestions, experience, and horror stories (if any arise) are NOT falling on deaf ears. I will buy the parts piece at a time and then take them in for installation. Loud is not really important to me. It is cool, but I would rather sacrifice volume for a deeper throatier tone. I LOVE the Flowmaster sound even though I think it often sounds like a truck, and I have them on my Hemi dodge with GREAT results, especially after cutting the pipes off the back and doing downturns. My truck has the 50HD and is not really that loud (the neighbors can hear me light up in the morning, and the wife can hear me coming home and get the boyfriend out before I get in the driveway ) but I often come up to trucks with much more volume. I can drive my truck with 4 passengers and we can talk without having to scream over the exhaust noise. But when I gun it, it does get "voluminous"... NOW--Location of muffler in relation to the length of pipe... What difference will a longer pipe before the muffler do in tone and volume. Should I do an x-pipe while I am at it, or will it make it too difficult to get at the drive shaft (I noticed you said it was located right at the front U-joint, so drive shaft AND transmission work should be relatively unaffected). This is the LAST exhaust system i am putting on this car, and I will lose the cutouts (sound great, but do nothing for the performance on my setup, and by the way, they will be for sale on here if anyone wants them ) So I will take my time and do it right. Finally, how are you guys hanging your exhaust? Weld to floor? To what? bolt up? etc.
That is nice...but I am not a member there, especially not a "Supporting member"...are you going to give me the Cliff's Notes version or do I have to go over there and read it myself?
DOH!!! I read the entire thread. Good info and lots of clips. Those guys like the 40s, but then say "next time I will go with the quieter 50s".
