I had the same thing happen to my 1968 Galaxie convt. I ignored the noise until it got really loud. I was on my way home and was going thru a small town that was having a summer festival. I turned a corner to avoid all the people and the axle broke loose and slipped out of the housing...it sliiped all the way out and the car crashed to the pavement...and cought on fire at the axle!! Luckily I had a two liter bottle of water in the back seat that I grabbed and put the fire out.

Anyways, I had to be towed home, had to replace the axle, the backing plate, brakes, bearing, etc.

: : I was driving down the road and all of the sudden I started hearing a clicking noise. I came to a stop sign and when I put on the brakes, there was a grinding sound which was similar to a metal on metal sound when your shoes are gone. It sounded like it was coming from the right rear and the whole car has about 10k miles on the breaks. I pulled away from the stop sign and it felt like something slipped a little but then it was fine. Anyone else had this happen? Is it possible that maybe the axle slipped out a little and the brake shoes didn't line up with the drum?

: My friend had the same thing happen in his galaxie 500 and he ignored it for a long time untill one day it got really loud and the whole wheel and axle came out when he was driving down the street he had to get it towed home and we were looking at it and we only found the remains of a bearing, we got it replaced and it has been fine ever since.
