You gave some good reasons, but most of them were clouded with prejudice. You say that the Maverick looks better than the Charger...that's nothing more than an opinion, and not one i exactly agree with. I LOVE the looks of a maverick, but the chargers (some years) are great looking cars. *I* think mavericks look like crap with the ass sagging to the ground (i use air shocks, and i'm proud of it)--the mavericks only look good IN MY OPINION with the weight of it shifted to the front (leaning forward).
you're right that the 289/302 were better than what chevy had (although chevy engines at the time could and still can be put to amazing horsepower--very good for supercharging), but mopars engines were simply better. I'll tell you, i would trade a cleveland for a hemi ANY DAY! The 318 and 340 and to a lesser extent the 360 were hp monsters, and could/can beat a 289/302 (the 360 was more of a log puller, but still decent). Yes, they weighed more, but in the end mopar usually turned up the winner.
I agree that the Chevy engines just weren't that great stock, they weigh more and just aren't that great. There were some shining examples, however, of Chevy's performance. My dad's first car, a '58 Chevy Bel Air with (smaller version of the 409, i don't remember the CID) and a two speed tranny beat out every other car he met. THe 409 also put out 409hp stock.
The Cleveland, although a great engine, did not ALWAYS win (i could be a smartass and point to the Cammer, which is the only engine ford ever made that ALWAYS won, but i won't). If you visited a Mopar page, there would be people saying the same thing as you, except the exact opposite! One page could be so bold as to say the Hemi won every race it entered! The Clevelands were dropped due to pollution controls and the fact that, aside from the heads, they weren't that greatly designed. The oiling was poor, and a race setup on a cleveland didn't last as long as one would have hoped. This is the reason taht some entrepreneurs created: the Clevor! Cleveland heads on the superior windsor block.

If you had included as many "iffy" cars on your list of collectibles for the competition as you did for the Fords, it would look like this:

*Fords*
Maverick <---Depends who you ask
Mustang
Cyclone
Comet
Cougar
Total: 5

*Chevy GM*
Camaro,
Corvette,
GTO
Chevelle and related 442s
*Buick GS (and GSX)
Novas
Impalas
Trans Ams
Total: 9

*Mopar*
Darts
Demons
Dusters
Chargers, Challengers (not boats, but actually VERY fast cars)
Barracuda/'Cuda
Coronets
Total: 7

So, according to this list, ford doesn't rule the road when you add in the ones you forgot.
Anyways, it's all a matter of perspective. I like my maverick, but i'm never going to claim that it is the superior force on the road, nor that i am the only intelligent individual on the road because i made the "right choice".
All i'm saying is, respect other peoples beliefs in their motor company of their choice. Ford is NOT the ultimate vehicle, and i don't know what is!
By the way, i have heard of Carol Shelby, you can find one of my other posts in which i stated that the Series1 is probably the ultimate vehicle thusfar.
