OK. If you Know what the EGR valve is & does, skip to the next part. The Exaust Recirculation Valve is an emissions control device.
When operating temp is reached, it opens and sends exaust fumes back through the manifold. While this may reduce emmissions, it reduces the amount of clean air entering the carb.

My opinion. An old Maverick, no matter how much you care about it, will never run as green as a newer car. With the advent of fuel cell technology we are really operating dinosuars.
So, removing a device that really isn't functioning well will only increase emissions slightly (if it was ever reducing them to begin with) but will increase the performance and efficiency of the engine.

These beasts used to run on leaded gas. The residue accumulated just like the inside of a chimney that never got cleaned.
If you want to clean it thouroughly, you can pull the carb, remove it and use what ever method you wish. If you are going to take it out of service (reccomended) you only have to clean it enough to insure it is not clogged open. Using the piece of speedo cable will only go as far as the other side of the EGR. It is stiff enough that you don't have to worry about it 'wandering' and causing any damage. Not that there is really anything to damage.

You should be able to get a spacer at your local speed shop.
