because they stick out from the heads too far and will touch the shock towers. as far as long tube headers go they will fit with colum shifter and with power steering(need an adapter to lower the actuator). Most header manufactures sell this adapter that lowers the actuator to clear the headers. The 289 cast HO headers are probably the best for the street if you want short headers. Long tubes are better but are louder and radiate more heat. 2" - 2 1/2" exhaust pipe is best for small blocks anything smaller and you loose power anything bigger and you loose power and gain a great deal of noise.
