I'm in the Air Conditioning business, If you can't afford to fix it right the first time don't do it. lets say the guy fixes it for $60 or you fix it yourself, What if it only lasts for a year? then you'll have to pay to fix it again. R134a is a good choice, but it involves a fair bit of work, see if anyone caries R414b, its a drop in for R12. But fix the leaks and fix them right, it will save you in the end.
